He thinks I don’t know his dirty little secret.

But I’ve been well aware for weeks.

He goes out several times a day - for no more than half an hour at a time - with his invisibility cloak in hand and I play a little game to amuse myself while he’s gone, called ‘guess the excuse Harry’s going to give upon his return.’ It’s a rather fun game, especially when he comes back and I innocently ask him what he’s been doing. I try not to laugh as he shifts from one foot to the other and stammers over his words. His excuses grow more outlandish by the day and tonight was no exception.

“I er… I was at Ron’s.”

“But Ron called by here and I told him you were out,” I reply.

“Yes… He mentioned it to me when I eventually ran into him.”

“Ahh. What were you doing?”

“Just talking.”

“Just talking?”

“Yep.”

“Sounds like fun.”

“Not really.” And he makes his excuses and goes to the bathroom. I usually leave him alone by this point but tonight I decide to follow him in there and I see him brushing his teeth furiously.

“Bad breath?”

He nods and spits into the basin. “Very.”

“Well I still love you,” I reply. “Bad breath or not!” and I move in for a kiss and just as expected, he staggers back until he’s against the wall.

“Don’t come too close,” he warns. “I’ve had garlic.”

I tilt my head to one side. “But I thought you were with Ron?”

“…I was.”

“And I thought you just talked?”

“We did.”

I shrug slightly. “So… where does the garlic come into it?”

He opens and closes his mouth stupidly and I want to tell him he looks cute when he’s trying to lie.

“Hermione… made it… by hand.”

“Made what?”

“Garlic… cake.”

I wrinkle my nose in distaste. “Garlic cake?”

“Yes. It was foul.”

“I’m not surprised. Wherever did she learn her culinary skills?”

He shrugs. “Beats me.” He puts a fresh layer of toothpaste on his brush and begins to attack his teeth again. He thinks he’s got away with it. He can think again.

“Next time I see her I must give her some of my recipes,” I say. “Garlic cake, indeed!”

“But you can’t!” he cries and I raise my eyebrows questioningly. “…Because you’d really hurt her feelings.”

“I’d hurt her feelings by offering her recipes?”

“Well the only thing she knows how to make is garlic cake and she’s very proud that she can churn those things out and each time they come out looking perfect.”

“But taste disgusting?”

He doesn’t answer. “All the more reason for me to offer her some more then,” I say matter-of-factly. I turn to leave the bathroom but then an idea pops into my head and I turn around and look at Harry in the mirror. “What about if we invite them over for dinner tomorrow?”

His cheeks go slightly red. “What?”

“Sure!” I continue enthusiastically. “We’ll invite them round for dinner tomorrow. I’ll ask her who is it that tells her they like garlic cake and why can’t she see that they are plainly lying to her!”

Harry doesn’t say anything and I smile broadly and walk from the bathroom before turning to him once more. “Oh, and Harry?”

He stares at me dully and then his mouth parts slightly as I throw him a packet of cigarettes.

“If you’re trying to hide the fact that you smoke from me, did you really think I’d miss your little collection of stub ends up on the balcony?”

I grin. “And nice try hiding them under the plant pot. But remember Harry: Nothing gets past me!”

I walk away.

“Yeah?” he sputters. “Well how come it took you three months to notice?”

I let that one slide. I think we both know who won this round.
