The nightmare for Draco Malfoy began when he took it upon himself to go through Harry’s belongings one day. He was rummaging through his bedside cabinet, tossing out things of little interest until he laid eyes on a muggle book entitled London. He decided to flick through it, just for a laugh, but found himself getting rather drawn to the big long beastly looking thing called the tube that ran somewhere called the underground. He mentioned it to Harry, one thing led to another and that’s how they came to be standing on the platform of the Victoria station.
“When the train comes it might be a little loud,” Harry said.
Draco sneered. “I’m not scared of some little mugg -” The train rumbled into the station, cutting off Draco in mid-sentence. Harry grabbed hold of his hand and squeezed it tight.
“We have to ride that rickety old thing?” he asked in disbelief when it had stationed and people started to get on. “We won’t make it out the other end!”
“It’s perfectly safe,” Harry replied and they entered the carriage. An old woman was slowly making her way down to a spare seat but Draco elbowed her out of the way and flung himself down into it.
“Draco!” Harry hissed crossly.
He grinned and waved and then noticed a man opposite tutting at him and shaking his head in disapproval. He leaned forward in his seat, indicating the man to do the same so their faces were close.
“Look at me like that again and I’ll be the last thing you’ll ever see. Understand?” he said in a low voice. The man didn’t reply, but sat back in his seat and made a point of not making eye contact with Draco again.
A shrill alarm-like noise went off and Draco stood up from his seat in fright. “What the fuck is that?” he cried. A few other passengers started to look nervous by his erratic behaviour.
Harry grabbed him by the elbow and pulled him away from them. “It’s just the noise indicating that the doors are closing.”
“Well what does that mean?” he asked in a panicked voice, visibly shaken.
“Hold onto the bar.”
Draco wrapped his arms around it in a death-like grip. “What does that mean?” he asked through gritted teeth.
“We’re about to move. But it’s only for one stop, it’s over in one minute and then we get off -” but Draco had heard enough and was about to try and prise the doors open, when the carriage gave a slight wobble as it stirred into acceleration and began to make its way into the black tunnel.
Draco emitted a noise that sounded like a mid-strangled scream and buried his face into Harry’s shoulder. The noisy shrieks and whistles of the carriage whizzing on the steel tracks polluted Draco’s eardrums and he felt uneasy and frightened. He wanted nothing more than to apparate himself back home but Harry had warned him that at no cost was he to do it with so many people in sight. The shrieks and whistles had quietened down now and the carriage took on a more steady, slightly rocking rhythm. Draco peered up, gripping onto Harry for dear life with one hand, and furiously wiping away stray tears and firing dirty looks to whoever dared make eye contact with him.
“It’ll be over any second now,” Harry said soothingly, rubbing the back of his neck in the way he knew Draco liked and sure enough light flooded through the windows and the short journey was over as the train broke to a stop.
People stood up from their seats and made their way to the doors, but Draco pushed his way to the front and made sure he was the first to reach the platform once they’d opened. He didn’t even wait for Harry as he looked this way and that for the exit and probably would have got lost as he raced through the maze-like corridors and found himself on another platform identical to the one he’d just left, had Harry not run after him and grabbed the back of his coat.
“This way,” he said, leading Draco to a set of stairs. Once they'd reached the top they deposited their tickets and were released into the open air once more.
“So how did you find it?” asked Harry once they were on the street.
Draco looked back at the station worriedly before giving it a scornful sneer. “As idiotic as I thought it would be,” he replied.
