i looked into this a bit and apparently this exact same bill shows up every year by the same small group of representatives and never gets anywhere.......apparently they just do it to raise awareness about some other lame issue....

The frightening thing is that we're one conflict short of needing a draft because Bush has our military stretched so thin. If one of the -real- problem states like North Korea and Iran were to do something, we'd be in trouble. Oh, and we're running out of bullets already, having to buy them from private companies. For people who love war so much, the bastards don't plan for the repercussions very well.
Of course, their friends probably own those companies.

You know, if he's a democrat he might be trying to point out the president's lack of preparedness by sponsoring a bill he doesn't really support.

In Greece, all men have to serve compulsive military service. A few of my cousins have done it. So this isn't entirely an abstract or new idea for me.

On one level, I'm comfortable with the idea that its about time for women to be registering for Selective Service as long as there is such a program. Equal rights, equal responsibilities. Blah, blah.

And in a similar vein, I think that civil or military service can be a great way to build character and teach civic responsibility, a quality deeply lacking on our generation. Of course, the problem is that I don't trust the current regime at all to show the same measure of civic responsibility back. Give me a wise leader, a good leader, one that knows restraint and believes in peace and cooperation with the international community, someone who deploys force judiciously and sparingly, and I would serve such a person and believe that compulsive service might be a good idea. But right now, and for the forseeable future, I will oppose that policy with every fiber of my being because I see ( ... )
