Deafness, communication, etc.

I'm roughly 50% deaf in both ears, from at least early childhood. It is a peculiar sort of deafness which knocks out my ability to hear midrange frequencies, normally associated with consonants in spoken English, while leaving me sensitive to higher and lower frequency sounds.   I get the missing ~50% of my 'hearing' from lip-reading.   Nobody else ( Read more... )

Dude, go take a real sign language class.

I think you might benefit from identifying yourself as deaf, have you had a hearing test lately? Your upper en has to be shrinking steadily so you might be even worse than you think.

A goon venue for getting some ASL practice is youtube, there are lots of videos of deaf people ranting about shit.

It usually doesn't come up in day-to-day conversation, even less so online. ;-)

I've known girls who thought I was, "super intense", because of how close attention I paid to what they were saying. One girl was sure that I was going to kiss her. She noticed I was watching her lips... not knowing it was me lip-reading.

27 years this fall (I think...). It wasn't until after college that I felt generally comfortable talking about it. The signs are perhaps somewhat subtle unless you've gotten explicit training.

[...alternately] And you call yourself a detective? ;-)
