At the moment, Ieyasu is largely focused on returning home only because Mitsunari is apparently desperate to return. In his head, they’ve made some sort of promise to go home together and thus, Ieyasu shall uphold that by doing his best not to hinder the other man’s progress. As a result of Mitsunari being a total workaholic, Ieyasu follows suit without much issue. It’s not that different from their constant training back home considering the turbulent time period. Therefore all of Ieyasu’s pokemon receive the most thorough attention as he trains them feverishly.
But unlike Mitsunari, he holds a large amount of sentiment for the creatures. His line-up rather lacks anything intimidating in the slightest as he instead picks up Pokemon that look weaker and may need protection. He picks them up and tries to raise them lovingly and carefully so they can grow up big and strong. The pokemon he has are growing to be like family to him, like creatures that he takes it upon himself to care for because he doesn’t wish to leave them alone.
He’s also convinced that he may someday learn how to speak with them. Their nicknames are results of him genuinely asking “What’s your name?” and mishearing their response.

Ichu is Ieyasu's starter pokemon and therefore the first pokemon that he truly felt the need to bond with. Though with Ieyasu's incredibly giving and rather naive personality, it's no wonder that Ichu saw the need to totally make a fool of him. He's a bit of a rascal who scampers around constantly and probably gets in trouble now and again, though Ieyasu does try to get him to behave... though it rather clearly doesn't seem to work. All the same, Ichu is slowly starting to trust the giant fool who is apparently his trainer and is content to sit on Ieyasu's shoulder, enjoying the feeling of dominance that comes with sitting on a really muscular guy. (Also, it makes it so much easier to hood him.) Simply put, it's a relationship that makes you wonder who is training who.
Ichu came from Ieyasu mishearing the Pokemon's name when he asked him formally what his name was. It stuck.

Already as they began their travels, Mitsunari and Ieyasu ran into an unexpected visitor. Just a few nights after they set out from New Bark Town, they were suddenly attacked in the dead of night by a terrible foe. By 'suddenly attacked', it really means 'had their camp crash landed into' and 'a terrible foe' really means 'a poor confused Hoothoot'. Ieyasu barely managed to save the poor thing from facing Mitsunari's wrath by instead choosing to capture it as opposed to have her wing broken. Now the Hoothoot still shows occasional signs of unstable movement but is incredibly outgoing and cheerful otherwise. She doesn't come out of her pokeball often because of Ieyasu's fear that she'll run into trouble, but when she does, it certainly makes Ieyasu happy to see her fly around. Her energy is contagious to him.
When they were in Violet, they'd done enough training that Oot managed to evolve! And now Ieyasu is rather surprised as she manages to be just a foot shorter than he is. She's still full of energy and eager to please, but there's a wise quality in her eyes now that makes her Ieyasu's first choice of companion when he ventures out at night and needs some guidance. He truly is coming to trust her with everything he has to say, even if she can only respond with quiet coos.

There is perhaps nothing more pathetic than a flopping fish and as a result of feeling immense pity for the poor thing, the Tokugawa general immediately adopted him. Noooot to mention there may have been some luck-mongering involved as they were in the middle of a rainy period and Ieyasu hoped that with a koi fish, their weather may improve. (Spoilers: it didn't happen.)
Ieyasu finds Garu to be the pokemon that is hardest to communicate with. Oftentimes he tries to stop at streams and let the pokemon out so they may have quality bonding time, but even then... conversation is hard to come by. Ieyasu will cross his legs and try to speak with the fish but only receives flailing in response. And sadly, flailing is far harder to translate than the whirs of gears like when he speaks to Tadakatsu. Still though, on occasion, he and Garu are able to have a quiet moment when Ieyasu reaches out into the water and pets the fish. They make eye contact, Ieyasu nods, and then it is clear that for just that moment, they are at an understanding.
For some reason, it took Garu a few extra levels to evolve, though luckily Ieyasu was patient with his little late bloomer. He was rewarded for his efforts with a Gyarados who can now respond to his conversations with vague roars and nudges. Garu now has enough power that he gives his trainer a bit of an attitude now and then, but Ieyasu is able to coax the beast into some compromises.

It was meant to be simple exploration of a suspicious-looking cave and Ieyasu walked out with a little bear cub in his arms. Certainly he wasn't complaining and is actually quite fond of the Teddiursa. Urs is a sweet little thing who has picked up some of her trainer's gluttonous habits and also has a slight adoration for attention. She constantly pesters Ieyasu for hugs and care when she's out of her pokeball, which he doesn't mind at all. It's simple to say that the little bear is coming to have Ieyasu wrapped around her little paw, though the affection is returned.
Sadly, she doesn't seem to enjoy battling very much. The fights aren't her forte, though Ieyasu doesn't seem to mind that much either and encourages her gently and quietly. She does best when she's only sparring against the pokemon she's come to recognize as friends and hesitates when facing wild opponents. Ieyasu only hopes she grows out of it, though he also manages to appreciate her big heart.
She should've evolved a long time ago but Ieyasu's just a little too attached to his teddy bear to let her grow up at the moment.

Guess which ray of sunshine may be greeting you as you check into your inn this week? Ahaha, oh yes. This derp. It was more of a "Oh they look short-handed! Let us help them, Mitsunari - they'll pay us too!" sort of deal and he managed to land both of them jobs! Ieyasu’s place is right at the front counter where he may cheerfully greet anyone and everyone who stops by! He works 8 hours a day for P400 per hour, and he resumes this position in just about every town they work in. He’s happy to stay all five days so by himself, he already makes P16000 within that period. He’ll continue to work for however long he and Mitsunari remain in town.
However Ieyasu is nothing if not incredibly trusting and so he really doesn’t keep much money for himself. For the most part, he gives his earnings to his traveling partner because the other man is far more responsible and capable. As a result, Ieyasu only holds onto a portion of their money for his own spending, should he ever encounter something that he needs or wants. Or at least that’s what he says. In reality, whatever money he has with him that he doesn’t need permission from Mitsunari to use instead goes to buying things for Mitsunari or his other friends. He’s just a loser that way. That’s where his first P500 went and likely where his money will continue to go. foreign items ▶ ▷ ▶ supplies
