Name:Ieyasu Tokugawa (first, last)
Series: Sengoku BASARA
Timeline: pre-canon
So! Sengoku BASARA has its weird timeline issues, and in the case of Ieyasu, it really depends on what’s going on. As far as the games go, he gets a random growth spurt by the third game, which is essentially the start of the manga canon, and the second season of the anime. Hoooowever to hopefully avoid some ridiculous major timeline issues within the cast concerning a few points in the canon (mostly who kills Hideyoshi), I’m going for pre-canon for now. o/ We can get a grasp on characterization from flashbacks in the game, some of the anime, and the manga canon, so I hope this is alright!
Canon Resource Links:
SenBASA Wiki PageIeyasu’s Wiki Page The nature of canon, mainly games vs. anime, make timelines a bit difficult to work with (Ieyasu, you died in the middle of Season 1, how did you come back all grown up by Season 2 when no one else changed…?) but apparent characterization remains largely the same.
Personality: Once upon a time, Ieyasu started off as this bratty little kid who wanted to conquer Japan aaallllll for himself and rode on the coattails of the strongest fighter in all of Japan: Honda Tadakatsu (a.k.a. Medieval Gundam Man). However by the time that he gets that growth spurt, he manages to turn into his own action hero and even steals the spotlight from the original duo some. This makes him into the basic shounen hero, complete with the need to protect everyone, befriend everyone, and make a united and happy world for-yes. Everyone. Ieyasu manages to be one of the most oblivious and well-meaning in the series. While yes, his goal is to unite Japan, he doesn’t plan to do it by conquering. But instead he aims to unite Japan by the power of bonds and alliances, but mostly bonds. Even if he has to punch everyone in the face to do it. It is a strange “I’ll punch you, you punch me, now we’re friends” mentality that works only in the world of Sengoku BASARA where brute force is how you earn respect and gain allies. The key point of all of it though, is that the overall goal is to be able to improve the living state for even the normal people and so that their bonds may not be torn apart.
In case it hasn’t been made clear, Ieyasu is a huge fan of getting along with people and everyone living in peace and harmony, like the sort of thing you would read in a fairy tale. There’s very little that manages to openly bother him and he is a firm optimist in most things. Even should one of his best friends betray him and fight against him, for unknown reasons at that, he will instead be glad because his enemy earned himself a worthy ally and thus it shall make for more understanding. For you see, his friend is a very good person and his enemy is in desperate need of a good influence, therefore their alliance is a good thing! … even if such a strong bond may lead to the unraveling of his own army and possibly lead to his own demise. He doesn’t seem to realize that this is an odd thing to be happy about, seeing as he laughs about it, his soldier cautions him not to laugh so merrily in front of the men…
Yet on the complete other hand, Ieyasu is not as strong as he seems. He says ridiculous things that don’t make sense even to the most optimistic of people. “The only change in me is that I no longer feel sadness” is something that most people would raise an eyebrow at. Sadly, that’s a common trait of Ieyasu’s. He’s prone to saying things that he may not entirely mean, but he wishes they were true. Despite the aforementioned quote, it’s pretty clear that the guy is perfectly capable of being incredibly depressed as he breaks down into a wibbling, sobbing mess at the corpse of his friend-turned-enemy. There are plenty of statements he makes that seem unrealistic, but he never means it malignantly- he just wants to believe it so desperately that it can only be said that the guy tries too hard. But if absolutely nothing else, you have to admit that his pretty language is very nice to listen to and put your faith in. (And that’s how he gets most of his allies, really. Pretty words and the strong army of people he did win over with those pretty words.)
Now with this people-pleasing personality, it makes it pretty clear that Ieyasu is…. Kind of a Doormat. You can yell at him, spit at him, throw a punch at him, but his response is only “you shouldn’t do that because other people won’t like it”. … no, not because his pride is hurt or the fact that he now has your gross spit all over him because someone never learned to say it and not spray it but because someone else might dislike you for it. He means it honestly, not sarcastically, and that’s the best part. Ieyasu never seems to dislike anyone no matter how he is treated, whether they aim to kill him or even if they work with him but seem to make his life hell. There is always a concern for them and that is what makes him so easy to push around-because for the most part? Fighting back doesn’t even cross his mind.
There seems to be only one thing that Ieyasu would even entertain the idea of pushing back on, and that’s the treatment of other people. Conflict is something he doesn’t like to see and that makes his life as a General in the Warring States period just a little bit difficult. In this position of responsibility, he would sooner give up a battle and relent to the enemy than allow any people to die when he finds it to be unnecessary. It is even worse should the common folks be brought into the mess, and that drives him to the point where he even rebels against his superior. He takes that shounen hero mentality and temporarily discards the doormat position just to try to fight for the people who cannot. His idea of survival of the fittest is when he may take the role of defending the weaker people. Good luck convincing him that’s not quite how it works.
Beneath all he does to please other people, Ieyasu is a level-headed person who, despite his occasional unrealistic optimism, knows his limits and is mostly reasonable. There is a naiveté but there is also an understanding as he goes out of his way to try to reach out to people. There is a backbone that does not relent when the well-being of the people of the Land of the Rising Sun is put into danger. He remains patient and logical and tries not to do anything too ridiculous too quickly, because he has learned that the bonds of the people are what push everyone forward. With that knowledge, he doesn’t act rashly and is fair even to his enemies, sparing their lives when he can so they may return home to their loved ones.
… past that, no one can deny that he is rather thick-headed and is prone to more than a few silly moments. Responsibility occasionally slips his mind and he forgets his position, taking a day off to view cherry blossoms just because he thinks it’s a good time for it. Mind you, this is in the middle of a war and he is the commanding general. There is never a good time to disappear from camp without telling anyone. He’s also forgetful and he may defend you one day, but never remember it a while after. His attention span and word comprehension is also something else to consider, as he can’t seem to recognize a love spiel when it slaps him in the face. Instead, he takes certain words and phrases and jumbles them, coming up with an entirely different meaning that makes you wonder how often he must clean out his ears.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the Unifier of Japan. What a guy.
Strengths/Weaknesses: + social butterfly : “Let’s form a bond” is the phrase that comes out of his mouth the most and he says it enough that you feel that you’ve gotten the point by the time he states for the 47th time that day that bonds are the Strongest Things Ever. He’s likable enough if only because he has a very high chance of liking the person in question plenty. It makes him popular amidst his soldiers if only because he’s so understanding and considerate.
+ incredibly patient : it is canon fact that even if you throw multiple punches at him, he’s more likely to laugh it off than punch you back. He’s not one for unnecessary conflict and actually prefers that everyone get along. Surprisingly, he’s very good at practicing what he preaches about patience and being careful about what you do.
+ physical strength : as a default with the samurai and all, he’s kind of incredibly physically capable. The simplest way to explain just how much of a tank this guy is that one of his attacks in the game is a string of headbutts and that makes for one of his strongest attacks.
Dude’s also got abs.+ strong leader : his speaking ability and ability to charismatically motivate others is something to be commended, if only because his soldiers seem to like him enough to go all Mother Hen mode when he does do something a bit brainless. The way that he tries to consider all points and all people makes him oh so very admirable in the eyes of a couple, it also lets him make very smart and informed decisions when it counts.
+ also he speaks robot fluently
- self-sacrificing : if it is for the people of Japan, you can probably count on Ieyasu to go leaps and bounds ahead of the other guys to do it. If he must sacrifice his own bonds to protect those of others, then he will do it. This is pretty bad and unhealthy. But what’s worse is that sometimes the breaking of those bonds affects others, especially when his good influence is taken away. So not only is he self-sacrificing, but he makes other sacrifice too because of the faulty decisions he makes.
- pretty thick-headed : a guy can only be so intelligent and act so intelligent before you realize he’s kind of a hopeless dork. If an enemy takes his camp, he will distantly remark “was that supposed to be there…?” Well, I dunno, Mister General and To-Be-Unifier of Japan, is it? Let’s not forget the time that he wandered out of camp in the middle of a war without telling anyone because he thought it would be a ~nice day~ to look at cherry blossoms.
- blind with faith : so there’s this guy who Ieyasu once worked with who now wants to kill him and is pretty insanely vocal about it (and insane too) but Ieyasu’s response is “why must you nurse these sins of old?” which is essentially the wordy equivalent of “y u mad”? It keeps him from fighting with his all and he drags his feet because he just doesn’t want to hurt the guy who, on the complete other hand, is ready to psychotically stab him with a pair of chopsticks. No one can seem to convince him that “hey, maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe you should break this guy’s face!” because Ieyasu just won’t hear it.
- soft-hearted & idealistic : well who knew that a war would be this hard, huh? Ieyasu is prone to extreme optimism and while he will fight, he also expects that everyone he fights will eventually come to surrender and put aside their pride so they can all live together in a Happily Ever After sort of thing. This helps him ruin a couple people’s lives and destroy the bonds that he normally advocates. At least most of the time he realizes it, but his fervor does manage to break other people on accident.

First Person Sample: [Good day, Route! There is now a smiling face greeting you on your communicator screen. He’s a new one, but he doesn’t seem distressed in the slightest. If anything, he is comfortable and chipper. The Pichu on his shoulder however, does not seem nearly so content.]
Ah, hello everyone! I-
Mmph!
[oh hey guys some loser just got hooded by a pichu come look
It takes some minor struggling at first but he does manage to pry off the pokemon by the scruff of its neck and manages to hold it up, removing his hood and huffing for a bit. Pichu seems the farthest thing from repentant as he has a gigglefit.
Ieyasu’s shoulder slump as his expressions softens. Then he seems to remember the broadcast.]
A-Ah, right…! Ah…. What was I going to say…? [He chuckles a bit and sheepishly rubs the back of his neck.] I’m certain I had it all planned out…
At any rate… I hope everyone is having a fine day? My name is Ieyasu Tokugawa! I… seem to have been captured in my sleep, yet the kind woman who declared herself my mother - my foster mother in this new country perhaps? - seems friendly enough! However I do need to return to my service for the Toyotomi, so if anyone could tell me… where they may be… I would be incredibly grateful!
As much as I like this land, I’m sure you understand. I cannot go back on my word after I have pledged service to others! Perhaps I may come back for a visi-
No wait, Katsu…!
[And then Pichu (named Katsu, perhaps?) seems to have had enough of his endless spiel and turns off the communicator with its tail. Shut up Ieyasu, no one listens to you after a while anyway.]
Third Person Sample: “Farewell, new Mother! I thank you for all your hospitality and the delicious morning meal!”
Ieyasu waved his goodbye to the kind lady who had greeted him, a half-eaten riceball in his other hand. Stray pieces of rice dotted around his mouth as he looked back and forth, curious and full of wonder. In his mind, it was not a bad situation by any means! For you see, not every day could be spent wandering the town you had just been kidnapped too. Most captors did not trust their prisoners so!
… then again, most prisoners would at least be kept within the Land of the Rising Sun, and this was no village or area that he recognized.
The squeak of “Pichu!” from his shoulder also reminded him that there were also strange animals that he did not recognize. Still, the cry for attention only earned the small mouse an absent-minded pat on the head as Ieyasu continued to munch on the delicious rice ball that had been given to him. Such is what happened when he was always hungry.
“Well, Katsu-“ he first started with a full mouth before he swallowed, glancing over at the pokemon that had received a portion of the name of Ieyasu’s faithful retainer, “- I suppose we should get to figuring out what to do from here.”
A quick survey of the town and Ieyasu was saddened to see that there was… almost nothing familiar. The floor was tiled, and he thought that was reserved only for castle pathways. Was he within a castle? Yet the woman who had claimed to be his mother did not introduce her as a lady of any sort. There was some sort of explanation about the pokemon companion he now had, but he did not understand much of it once he got the general gist that it was a new bond that should not be taken for granted and they may learn from each other!
…. Perhaps as soon as he learned to speak Pokemon, for the squeaks coming out of the mouse still made no sense to him.
The brunette opened his mouth to perhaps make an intelligent suggestion, but suddenly a young boy of the town came up to him.
“Hey Mister! Can you play with us? We need one more person for our game!”
Ieyasu blinked once, twice, and considered it deeply. Exploration should be done to gain information so he may return home as soon as possible… however these children could not continue their game if he were to decline.
The decision was simple.
“Of course! What game are we playing, young man?”
