haha wear whatever you want! I saw conductor wearing cheongsam before! But I think same rules apply - don't distract. I would go for comfort too.

I would think a women's suit with pants (with appropriate cutting) would be ideal?

Haha... Vainpot in me wants to look nice ma ;p

Cheongsam? OMG... I think I would rip it into pieces (Incredible Hulk?) once I started moving my arms!

I think the problem with suits in general is that some of us end up look very *butch* (you know what I mean). Sometimes I think I look more manly in the jacket than some of the other male conductors I know :s

hehe

go G2000 sweetie! I think the 'banker chic' look would work! I think 'Bank director' and 'band director' mutually exclusive here!

Strangely, the choir conductors never have the same problem! It's probably cultural. Even if you have to wear a full skirt, and it takes time, go ahead. They have no choice but to wait anyway. Saying that, I'd choose a nice cute, loose white/pastel top (a little frill at the collar never hurt) with black women's pants (tapered) and black low heels.

Actually ar, what do they wear? I've been trying to do some research online but not seen much.

Heha, did you realize the material of the top would be quite important as well? Because of the overall impression and 'feel' that you want to convey to the musicians. Things like cotton/ linen will seem too casual and 'loose'. I think white/ pastel colors for top should be avoided because of the white shaft of the baton. I get quite peeved when a conductor wears white/ cream, uses a baton with the white shaft, has bling rings and watch, and throws shards of lights around when the hands are moving around. *personal opinion* ;p

"Throw shards of lights around when the hands are moving..." reminds me of the X-men character Dazzler =)

I think choir conductors like to wear loose blouses, and they usually don't use baton. Generally, I think you're right to say that maybe a jacket will look too butch. You need something that allows for movement. At the same time, you could turn what seems to be a disadvantage into an advantage. No precedence? Make your own! You can wear a hint of colour, like a bow at the waist (behind or at the side). You can even wear boots! How about tailored pants with a stripe down the side? Sexy, but like drum major!
