Amazon.com wtf?

Feb 06, 2007 09:13

Okay, so, throught the various blogs I read, I came across an interesting piece of news. Amazon.com is selling (and apparently publishing, through a self-publish/on-demand publishing subsidiary) a book of poetry by a self-proclaimed pedophile about, you guessed it, pedophilia. Showed up late last year. Amazon is, from what I can tell, defending ( Read more... )

Well, what is the content of the book, exactly? Therein may lie the explanation. Just saying it's "about pedophilia" isn't really saying anything. There are probably countless whole textbooks that are "about pedophilia".

If, for example, the poetry is about the sickness itself, or the person describing their struggle with it, or society's issues with it, or whatever, then I can see Amazon's defending it as expressive art, and i'd support that.

If, on the other hand, the poetry actually describes the acts involved, then i don't see how it's not effectively child porn, in which case it should be treated as such. ...but i don't know how those laws apply to books. Like isn't "Lolita" technically child porn? Or maybe it's not graphic enough?

There are many things that i'd vastly prefer not to be exposed to... especially since i've had kids. The list of things that i'd denounce as totally intolerable within society, tho, is far shorter. Which this is depends on exactly what we're talking about here.

Gosh, I have no idea how many books have murders in them...

Therein lies the problem. The blogs that first referenced the book seem to think it's descriptive, and glorifies the crime.

They also claim the the author is self-proclaimed and unapologetic. Member of the North American organization whose name is, in my mind, synonymous with justifiable homicide.

So, I guess I'll do a little more research, and update.

1. Amazon does have a point about freedom of speech. Do we have to take Lolita off the shelves too?
BUT
2. A quick google search shows this guy is the real deal, and admitted peado. Intent does enter the picture here. This isn't an examination on the mind of a pedophile or anything like that, it's what the guy tries to do.
3. Let the outrage surge for a bit and it'll be gone. No way is Amazon going to the wall for this guy. What I'm guessing happened is that it went through the self-publishing subsidiary and amazon without anyone seeing the content at all (I work in entertainment duplication..there is no way we could check the content on all the material that comes through here, and we're a small operation). No they're trying to save some face, I doubt they even realize at this point how bad the book is. Once they do it'll be gone.
4. To top it all off, it looks like shitty vampire fiction too. Why does shitty sex fiction always have vampires?

RE:
1) Never read it, though I have heard about it. Do you HAVE to take the book off the shelves? Nope. Amazon doesn't have to stop selling the filth, either. However, I don't HAVE to shop there.
2) Right. Glorification, not examination or self-diagnosis or apology.
3) Hope you're right. Some of the customer service responses purportedly received have been unencouraging. Plus, of course, their speed of response is disappointing. Granted, they must have a huge (and probably global) customer service organization - it's possible that the variety of reponses is inevitable, and will be corrected with a unified message in the future.
4) Word. Though, in truth, I hesitate at ANY vampire fiction, as it seems to draw more than its fair share of crappy authors. But I'm not going to stop doing business with somebody because they publish/sell shitty sex fiction, shitty vampire fiction, or some combination thereof. Hell, I've got to buy my Friedman SOMEWHERE.

3. I haven't gone in depth on the research, but from the quick glances at some blogs after a google search it looks like folk who've written in have gotten fairly automated responses. I'm thinking that there's some folks over at Amazon pulling their hair out and screaming "What the hell do we do now? I'm going to be fired for this!" In the next couple days someone over there is actually going to put their hands on the book, actually read some of these statements where the guy admits he's fishing for saplings and this thing is gonna disappear. I'm gambling that it's the length of their bureaucracy that's keeping this thing up for sale at this point. Once someone with any authority gets all the relevant details, it''l be gone.

I think the Rev's right. Regardless of whether or not the book technically violates any particular code of ethics or whatever, Amazon will just cave to the market forces. It's just a matter of the execs having enough meetings to find out what's up and sign off the appropriately carefully-worded press-releases and all that...

Well, I say....print it...then arrest everyone..or black ball them from everything. Have that TV show where the guy bust online predators. they can ambush them outside thestore and ask them why they bought the book. Then preview it on every channel. I bet they all say its for a research assignment. Thats how i have all my S&M stuff. Purely academical.
It IS a persons right to "speak", but it does not guarantee them refuge from the ramifications there of. So print it...take the cash and give it to the babies he raped. I dont think he can profit off of his crime...i think there is a law about it, but maybe thats individually decided by the judge.
