Part two of the [e][d][e][n][r][i][s][i][n][g] story.

“Ready?... Begin!” Mr. Yohmei shouts and the metal begins to clash.

The swords class has begun. My first class of the day, and by far my favorite. Learning to use weapons is mandatory thing at this school because without it, we would be susceptible to the Humans and unable to defend ourselves; that is, if we didn’t use our claws first. Using the sword, our world is less likely to be discovered.

Students have the choice of learning archery, sword or staff. Right off you can tell who will take what. Those who manipulate magick will pick the staff because it helps control and balance their powers. Girls who don’t fall under the category of magick manipulators, will pick archery; in other words, cheap shot pansies that wouldn’t dare go into direct combat. And finally the boys of the non-magickal fields take the swords class; me being the one exception.

I chose this class over archery because I’ve known how to use a broad sword since I was 5. This class allows me to learn about the smaller, thinner and more analytical swords and style. Fighting the way this allows, it is an outlet for the stress and anger I feel towards being singled out by the world. The fierceness I show is probably how I made it to the top three; 3rd being myself, though I vie very closely for second as I know all the tricks and moves my brother uses. Merrick and I are far behind from the 1st chair slot, though.

Xaos Ishtar. Highborn Son of Master Zeks, Head of the Ishtar Vampire Clan. An albino, a social recluse, and possessed by a Fae. Faes are the elemental spirits or gods that take on a living creature as an avatar, feeding off their life energy and in return, giving the host unimaginable power. The spirit also drains the host of color, thus making him an albino. He is a social recluse by choice, and no one bothers him about it, most being either too scared or too lowly to be able to approach a Head’s Highborn Son, especially from such a powerful clan. In the instance of his Fae, he could be considered a hybrid like me, but they are completely different circumstances, and so he is respected while I am ridiculed. I am not jealous of him though. Having a Fae is stressful on the mind, and one must have strong mental barriers to prevent the Fae from taking over the body completely.

He is one of the few who can best me in most of the classes assigned to vampires. I am on a higher level than him when it comes to Healing magick, though that is most likely caused by having been sired by two Healer clans. Currently he is sparing with my brother while I am stuck fighting the 4th chair student. Lucius Foret, the one man out for my blood, and seriously.

He fought so hard to get to fourth just so he could be on a closer level to me so he could attack me without getting into trouble. He has had many “accidents” as well. But so far he is playing fair. I block his high down swing, knocking it aside before lunging forward to stab him in the stomach. My jab knocks him backward onto his arse and Mr. Yohmei calls for me to be more careful.

Lucius is back and his feet and I get a cold feeling in the back of my mind. I look at his face; it is smoothed and emotionless, except for the eyes, which blaze with a mixture of hatred and plotting. I now know to be extra careful, despite the fact Yohmei said to be careful with Lucius and not myself.

We both hold defense stances as we face each other, before I lift my sword in a side swing a carry through with a swift upper cut. My swing swerves slightly as the oversized and threadbare glove on my hand shifts. Oh, crap. Lucius lunges at me, but instead of his blade heading towards my torso as it should have, it hits my glove and rips into it, reaching skin. I can feel the cool steel bite into my wrist and my hand goes limp. My sword clatters to the floor and my arm drops, taking Lucius’ blade with it and pushing it further into a vein. By the pressure at the end of my arm, it seems to have hit my wrist. I damn this bloody glove of mine; now bloody literally.

Blood is seeping through my dirty white glove as well as onto my sleeve. I curse a loud before ripping my hand away from the sword still in my wrist and Lucius’ hand and yank at my jacket. People in the room stop to watch. At the lack of noise, Mr. Yohmei comes out of his office.

“Get that jacket off of you before you ruin it!” He screeches at me.

“I’m trying!” I snap in response, as its hard enough to use one hand to get out of the difficult straps. Xaos approaches me and quickly helps me out of the ‘straight jacket’ as I have officially dubbed it. I am very surprised and I'm sure several others are as well, but my wrist hurts too much to care at the moment. When my wrist is finally free, many gasps and a few thuds are heard through out the room, the amount of blood pouring from my arm slightly shocking. Even I have to pause and stare.

As is common with vampires, if a deep cut is given and a decent amount of blood comes out, the blood energy that escapes can still be saved if the blood is re-drank. So I lift my wrist to my mouth and gather as much of the coppery liquid into my mouth before swallowing. A few of the werewolves and elves in the room make sounds of disgust. Mr. Yohmei is at my side collecting my bloodied gear and Xaos is still slightly to my right and behind, standing. When my wrist is relatively clean, I gather half a notch of blood energy into the middle and index finger on my left hand and bring it to my right. On the first sweep, any infection that could have gotten in is removes. The second sweep closes the weeping veins. Gathering more blood energy, I sweep my left fingers over my right wrist again and the wound slowly begins to heal. Gods, am I thankful for being good at this.

When Yohmei has returned he glares in my direction before telling people to get back to their places and begin sparing again. The few elves that passed out are woken up. I stay where I am.

I fear that if I move I might fall over. More blood than I thought must have escaped, because I feel very, very drained, especially from three rounds of Healing magick. Xaos surprise me again by placing a hand on my shoulder.

“Are you alright? I can tell you lost almost too much blood. You might want to see the nurse.” His calm voice sounds out, but the fact that he was being nice to me scared me. No one is nice to me.

I shrug my shoulder from his grasp as calmly as I could, which isn’t much as I'm almost scared out of my mind and luckily I only stumble a little before regaining my balance.

“I'm fine. I don’t need your help.” I'm proud that my voice doesn’t waver with the emotions I'm feeling. ‘This is a prank. You know how to avoid these. Set your head straight and think.’

“I still think you should see the nurse.” He says steadily, not perturbed in the least by my actions. “Mr. Yohmei,” He called to the teacher.

“Yes. Xaos. What can I do for you.” The teacher replied, cheerfully, ignoring me.

“I'm taking Atemis to the nurse’s ward. I believe she lost too much blood.” His voice is still calm and steady.

I suddenly realize that if he takes me to the nurse’s ward, we will be alone the whole time it takes to get there. My eyes widen at the realization of what could happen, and as I'm standing behind Xaos, I glance at the teacher, whose face had paled and was glaring at me. I looked pleadingly and shook my head, ‘No. Don’t make me go.’ He glances back a Xaos, a ghost of a smirk on his face and he nods his head in acceptance. Oh gods no, please don’t let him hurt me.

Xaos turns back towards me and I quickly school my features. He beckons me to follow him, and nervously, I do. I stand behind him the whole time, my entire body tense, waiting for an attack, despite the obvious fatigue my body was feeling. At the nurse’s ward, before entering, Xaos turned around, and I stiffened, the hairs on my body following my example. He looks me over frowning. Before pulling a deep black vial from his pocket. He offers it to me before saying, “This is pure blood energy. On Hunt nights, I collect the extras that the Fae gives off and store it incase of emergency. When Nurse Kava gives you more blood, take this 30 minutes later. It will fuse with the rest of your blood and keep you replenished until next week’s Hunt night.”

I stare at him, absolutely speechless, but accept the vial none the less. What is he getting at and what is he on? I heard some rumors about makil weed being sold…

He opens the ward room doors and walks in, approaching the absent minded Nurse Kava, who was oblivious to whom I was and so gave me the blood I needed without fuss. I was given a cot to lie on, and while I settled down to sleep, I remembered the blood energy I was to take and checked if 30 minutes had passed. I realized I must have already drifted off at some point as Nurse Kava was back in her office and Xaos was long gone. I downed his blood energy and instantly felt myself filled again, and the fatigue, brought about normally by a good hunt, took over. I fell into a peaceful sleep, only to be awakened hours later by a teacher and sent back to my dorms.
