MLA (no, not the modern language association but the museum, libraries and archives council) have a list of the 30 books that a panel/commission/group of librarians voted that every adult should read before they die. Here is the list with strikes through those i have pwned.

The Golden Compass, Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass are awesome! They are my favorite series of all time. And Lovely Bones wasn't too bad either.
