So, will they reach for their dreams as the obstacles keep coming up?

Dream 34

After an about three hour journey, finally the car - where Chihara was in - stopped. She stepped out only to be greeted by the lovely blowing sea breeze that swayed her medium-length hair. And yeah, she was taken to a beach - private beach - by the mysterious driver.

“Why do you take me here?” she turned to the driver who stood just a few inches behind her. She even could felt warm breath exhaled by…him.

“Why? You don’t like it?” he returned it with a question.

Chihara was about to get rid of her uneasy feeling when it haunted her again. She remembered how the uneasy feeling filled the tensed atmosphere in the car for the whole journey. Not even a word slipped off their mouth as theirs were locked tightly. And he - the driver - was fully focused on his driving and seemed to ignore the girl beside him. With his serious face on, Chihara did not dare to start a word although inside, she was demanding for an explanation or else just left her.

“Chihara, you seem to be dreaming?” that voice cut her little trance. Chihara startled as she heard someone called her name. It was her biggest mistake - she would easily melt if anybody called her that way.

“Ah…I’m sorry,” Only that word slipped out.

“No need to be sorry,” he reprimanded. “In fact, I am the one who shall say sorry,” he settled himself on a rock.

“Hara-chan, I’m sorry,” again, Chihara was much more stunted. Why he call me that way?

“I shouldn’t do that to you. I know it’s my mistake. I’m really sorry,” he apologized.

The bitter look of Chihara biting her lower lips that day was very clear in his mind. He never expected that his attitude would affect her that much. He just thought to trick her a bit and it turned out worse than his original plan. Perhaps their act was a bit too much.

“Well, who’s that girl?” Chihara coldly asked.

“My sister,” he answered - short. “More exact, stepsister,”

“No wonder you guys don’t look alike,” she turned to him. “Her name?” she inspected more, still unsatisfied. Never think that I’ll let go of you that easily!

“Is it that important to you?”

Silent. No answer from Chihara.

“Will you forgive me, then?” he pleaded. Chihara preferred to face the sea than him to avoid that magical power of his eyes, afraid of getting melt.

Feeling so much guilty, he approached Chihara, kneeling in front of her, “Will you?”

Chihara slowly turned to him. She looked deep into his eyes - for sincerity of course - for some minutes before bursting into a big laugh.

“Hikaru, get up!” she ordered. “Enough of your act!”

Hikaru got up quickly. He understood the situation so he joined her laugh. Better than I expect!

For Chihara knew Hikaru was serious, she acted out as it was just a prank. Well, to overcome the tensed atmosphere and her uneasiness feeling. And yeah, good thing that Hikaru was a joker, he sensed it very well.

Chihara landed her butt on the sticky sand, facing the sea. Basically it was just the two of them there. So, no need to be shy. Hikaru followed her, settled himself on a rock - again, perhaps he loved rock that much - not far from her.

“The sea breeze is damn calm, isn’t it?” Chihara started a new topic.

“Of course it is!” Hikaru claimed. He changed his position a bit so he could grab a full view of Chihara with her hair being blown gently by the wind.

“During the day, the beach area which has lower specific heat capacity becomes hot faster than the sea area which has higher specific heat capacity. Warm air in beach area is less dense and thus it rises upwards resulting in an ‘empty’ space on the beach area. Then, cool air from the sea blows towards the beach area and fill up the ‘empty’ space,” he explained.

“Specific heat capacity? What animal is it?” As usual, the physics-dumb Chihara asked stupidly to Hikaru.

“Well, it is the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of a kilogram of substance by one degree Celsius. Substances with low specific become hot faster while substances with high specific heat capacity become hot slower.

Example of low specific heat capacity substances are metal and heat conductor while example of high specific heat capacity substance are non-metal and heat insulator. Get it?”

Chihara nodded.

“So, for land breeze… will the mechanism be the same?”

“Yup,” Hikaru answered shortly. He straightened his left leg and rested his right arm on his propped right leg. He then tilted his head to catch a full view of Chihara.

“Let me try,” Chihara excitedly replied. “During night, the beach area which has low specific capacity becomes cold faster than the sea area. Or in other word, the sea is warmer than the beach area. Isn’t it?” she asked for confirmation.

“Then?”

“Warm air sea area is less dense and thus it rises upwards resulting in an ‘empty’ space on the sea area. Then, cool air from the beach blows towards the sea area and fill up the ‘empty’ space,” she copied Hikaru word by word with the exception of shifting the position of beach and sea.

She turned to Hikaru with a bright smile of her victory only to receive a stare from him. She moved her palm in front of his gaze hoping for everything to back to normal. But, he sat still in his current position - frozen! Chihara panicked so she stopped her hand movement. What’s with him? Is he trying to create a problem again?

Slowly, Hikaru moved his body forward, leaning closer to Chihara. Their faces were about to meet when the stunted Chihara suddenly broke the silence.

“Hey! It’s sunset!” she exclaimed happily. Quickly, she took off her wedges and ran approaching the sea until the borderline between water and sand. It had been her dream since small to view the sunset live and only now she got the chance - thanks to Hikaru!

Later, Hikaru joined her. He too did not want to miss the excitement felt by Chihara.

“It’s set already, ne?” Chihara asked him as soon as she felt his presence. Hikaru just nodded.

“If it’s set already…then, how is it possible to still be visible?” she blurly asked for another physics-related confirmation.

A little silence filled up the atmosphere. Chihara sensed a movement approaching her body and the awkwardness haunted her again.

“Hara-chan,” a few seconds later, Hikaru finally opened his mouth. He tilted Chihara’s head so it faced him. “Can I have a request?”

“Emm…?”

“Can you stop asking anymore physics-related question?” he tried to beg using puppy eyes’ power which seemed to work.

“Why?”

“Physics discuss things physically only, not mentally, psychologically nor emotionally,” he paused.

Chihara waited patiently for the next word.

“I want to spend my time with you…not only physically but… mentally and emotionally too,” he resumed with a smile carved on his lips.

Chihara startled. She looked deep into his eyes before closing it tightly as she noticed something’s going to happen.

________________

Since Hikaru is not accepting any physics-related question, I’ll answer it on his behalf XD

I’ll try to make it clear since it is a bit hard to be explained. XD

The basic concept is light ray refract away from normal when travel from denser medium to less dense medium.

The region nearer to the sea surface is colder to the region above it. Hence the lower region is denser than the upper region. Light ray ‘bend’ away from normal (the vertical line). [Refer to circle 1]

As the ray keeps ‘bending’, it will reach a point in which it can’t ‘bend’ out anymore. Instead it will ‘bend’ inwards. [Circle 2] This phenomenon is known as total internal reflection in which the angle of refraction is greater than the critical angle of the medium and finally the ray is reflected inwards.

Since I can’t any diagram on the net, I have no choice but to draw it myself. And sorry if it does not really help. I know my diagram is bad and I sucked everywhere.

Three weeks later, school reopened. The boys and girls sighed as their parents asked them to prepare their things to go back to school.

“Why so fast? I haven’t fully enjoy myself yet,”

“Shut up. Just do as I said. And be fast. We’re going soon,”

“Argh!”

A/N: Specially for you, Hara-chan! I hope you like it. For me, this is the romantic-most part I ever wrote for this story and I know that I pretty mush suck at it XD

And yeah, I know the last part doesn't make any sense XD

One more thing, thank you for those commented on my previous post (the one I express my worry). I really touched by your comments. Thank you girls. Love you so much. And don't worry cause I'm going to continue the project. Just that I'll put in on hold for a while and back to work it out after mid Dec. :D

As usual, comments are very much appreciated ^^
