Dream 38

“Kei-chan!” someone greeted him as Keito sneaked out of the room. It was Mayuko.

“You seem so happy. Anything great happen?” Keito replied the greeting.

“Well, I managed to catch up and finally my grade is up back!” she excitedly announced. However, because of her hyperly-excited reaction, she accidentally bumped into Keito. A bottle fell on the ground. Keito picked it up.

He frowned as he read the label on the bottle. “How long since you start consuming this?”

“Since new term started,” Mayuko answered slowly, looking at the floor since she did not dare to look at Keito’s serious face. “Migraine attacked me again, so I took this to relieve the pain,” she tried to explain the real situation of her but Keito did not seem to accept her reason.

“No, this is not the best solution for migraine,” he told her. “You know right, aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is not good to our body? You’re aware that it can cause ulcer bleeding, don’t you?”

Mayuko nodded.

“Then, why you take it?”

“I don’t have any choice,” Mayuko answered him although she knew he won’t accept such lame excuse.

“Well, you can choose paracetamol. Its effect is lighter,” Keito paused. He took a deep breath. Mayuko was still looking at the floor.

“Mayu-chan,” Keito called. His tone was different - much softer. “I’m sorry. But I want only the best for you. I don’t want you to fall sick. I’ve read somewhere that paracetamol effect need 5-10 years to be fully disposed from our body. Imagine how long the stronger aspirin will do?”

“It’s fine. I understand,” Mayuko responded with a cold tone. “If there’s nothing else, then, please excuse me,”

“Mayu-chan,” Keito grabbed her arm before she managed to leave. “You’re a teenager, ujust like me. In fact I’m older and yet you’re the only study at a higher level,” he paused to catch a breath. Mayuko looked into his eyes - the eyes that care of her so much. “Don’t stressed yourself. Take good care of yourself and have enough rest. I’ll always support you.”

Hearing that, Mayuko felt so touched, like she was very much appreciated for the first ever time in her life. She could not hold it any longer and ended up hugging Keito.

That afternoon, Chihara called her committee board member for a quick meeting.

“Good afternoon, girls. And welcome back,” Chihara started the meeting by greeting them. “I’ve just realised that I haven’t welcomed you yet,”

“It’s fine, yo,” Yume spoke up. The others nodded in agreement.

“Well, I’m calling for this meeting today to discuss on an important thing,” Silence floated in the room as the others were listening carefully to her.

“I’ve been called by BEST President,”

“Then?” Yume could not wait as she heard the word BEST.

“They wish to combine our club since both underline the same objective. So, what do you guys think?” she asked her fellow followers for opinions. It had been her belief since forever that leader should never make decision by his of her. Majority should be listened to.

“I think…”

************

Yuuki walked as the usual her - fast but steady and calm with a bit of arrogant style - towards her group’s members who were waiting patiently in the main lounge for her to come back with the result.

“Girls, we got genetic engineering,” Yuuki told them as she approached the group. “Well, the production of insulin,”

“Wow! Sounds so cool!” Shizuka claimed.

“That’s really good. We can help people with diabetes mellitus,” Luisa added, with some facts. “If it’s a success, then I’m a scientist!” she proudly announced.

Only Miki seemed not to be happy. “Miki, why? You’re not interested?” Yuuki asked her.

“Nope,” Miki shook. “But, isn’t it more fun to create a …”

“Gadget?” Luisa quickly cut her.

“Yup,” Miki nodded. “Like a time machine, it’ll be funnier, ne?”

“Oh, Miki, you watched too much of Doraemon,” Luisa sighed. “Such thing is just imaginative, it does not exist.”

“Well Miki, it’s not that I chose. We threw lot,” Yuuki explained since she’s the one responsible in determining the task they would do.

“Shall we start?” Shizuka asked. Yuuki nodded.

“We are given two main materials which are 2 ml of pancreatic juice and these E.coli bacteria,” Yuuki showed the two small tubes to her friends.

“So, what are we going to do with them?” Shizuka asked for further explanation. Everyone had started to act like scientist especially Luisa who was excitedly ‘decorating’ herself with goggles, mask, lab coat and gloves while playing with forceps and Petri dish. An exception was for Miki who looked all gloomy of her disappointment for not getting any gadget-related task.

“We’ll extract the cells in the pancreatic juice that secrete insulin. Then, we have to cut a segment of the DNA of the cell, just a small segment,” Yuuki explained, demonstrating it with her finger. “Next, the small segment that we cut will be ‘joined’ to the plasmid.”

“Ano…can I know what is plasmid?” suddenly Miki’s mood change and she acted out a journalist role with a measuring cylinder in her hand as microphone. She moved it nearer Yuuki’s mouth.

“Well, plasmid is the bacteria in which a small part of their DNA is cut and removed to allow joining of new DNA from the insulin-producing cell. This will produce a new DNA combination. Then, the new combination will be fused back into the ‘host’ bacteria. The bacteria will be cultured to obtain more bacteria and they will produce insulin. If it success, then we’re done,”

“Thank you,” Miki coughed, in so journalist-ish manner. Both Luisa and Shizuka were holding their stomach to prevent their big laugh from burst out.

“The procedure sounds pretty easy,” Miki took a view of the apparatus and started topping them upside-down - so professor-ish!

“Yeah, pretty easy. But since it’s very tiny, we have to carry out under microscope and it requires really high focus. That way, it makes the experiment hard,”

“Okay, final question,” Miki coughed again. “What is genetic engineering? I don’t even know the meaning of it.” Then how possible for me carry it out? She continued the question in herself.

“Good question,” Yuuki started to act so professional - which she really liked to do! “Genetic engineering is a process of altering genetic material in which a part of DNA molecule of a living cell is transferred to another living cell’s DNA information of creating a new DNA combination. It sometimes is referred as recombinant technology,”

“Thank you, Prof-to-be Kaneshiro Yuuki-san,” Miki bowed a bit. “So, that’s how the process is carried out. Dear audience, my advice is to ‘never try it at home’ because I know you won’t get the apparatus. Till then, jaa~ we’re off to finish it now,” Miki waved, facing to the huge screen where LCD image was often fell on.

By this time, Shizuka and Luisa could hold it any longer and they burst into really big laugh.

“Miki, you’re funny!” Shizuka claimed in her laugh.

“I never know that when you experience sudden mood change, you’ll be like this,” Luisa added in her last bit of laugh. Yuuki smiled, looking at her friends, realizing how close they were.

This is the picture of the process.

The second is clearer (I think). Somehow it looks like puzzle XD

Extra:

Anyway, genetic engineering is not really approved by some religions due to the fact that it changes genetic information, which is equal to changing the creature of God.

A/N : I nearly finish this. Wait for few more chapters. Just few more!

Ah yeah, don't forget to comment~
