Summary : Write a story starting with
"It had been raining all day..."
It had been raining all day and there was no sign that it would stop. I was packing my stationary and books since extra class had just ended. I stared at the window only to witness the downpour became heavier each second. My eyes then wandered around the class, looking for anything that could replace an umbrella. However, nothing seemed to be useful. I let out a deep sigh.
Finished packing, I took a look on my watch. 5.30 p.m. which meant that I had been trapped in my own class for nearly 30 minutes. I grabbed the nearest chair and rested my butt on it. I placed my chin on my propped crossed arms, staring blankly at the raining cats and dogs. I remembered my promise to mom. She had extra work and made me, the first born, to take care of my younger siblings. I nodded willingly, saying that I would prepare dinner for them.
And now? It was nearly dusk and I was yet to be at home. I blamed myself to not bringing any umbrella like what I had always done. I was muttering alien word but deep inside I prayed hard. Either the rain stopped instantaneously or an angle came to save me. I waited for three minutes, but nothing happened.
Finally I decided to just run under the rain. I closed my eyes tight as I approached the downpour. I could clearly listen to the nice rhythm of water bathing the earth.
“Wait!” The nice rhythm was cut by someone’s voice.
A familiar one! That can’t be him! I monologue inside. I opened my eyes only to see an umbrella. I could sense someone’s warmth near me. Slowly, I tilted my head only to make contact with boy I had crush on. My heart skipped beat and I could feel my vessels dilated.
“Excuse me, but you seem to be in trouble. Can I accompany you home?” He politely asked, carving a warm smile on.
My prayer was heard and here the angel comes! ‘Very much of my pleasure, oh my deary prince charming!’ However, those words were choked in my throat.
“It’s fine. I can wait till the rain stop,” I slowly declined the offer. I was about to start a move when my left arm was grabbed.
“It won’t stop till tomorrow,” He held my arm tight that I had not a single chance to let it go. No choice, I followed him home - my home, obviously! “Well, at least the weather forecast says so,” he told the truth as we passed the main gate.
It was my first time walking with a guy so the awkwardness was there. I kept trying to put a distance between us but didn’t know whether it was the space under the umbrella was too small for two slimes like us or that he kept moving his body towards me. Fed up of the endless failure, I gave up. From the tail of my eyes, I noticed that he was smirking. I gave him a sharp warning look before continue walking firm and straight. And my effectively working eardrum heard a giggling.
Suddenly, my hand felt warmth. Something’s peculiar must had happen since it was still raining heavily! By using the sense of touch, I was sure that he was holding my right hand. I tried to free it but it seemed that the harder I tried, the tighter his grip was. I tried stretching my hand but he seemed to be very familiar with my rhyme. I inserted my hand into my pocket but he was still following. I tried to pull it away, but he was patient enough to keep moving his too!
Minutes later, I felt the warmth slowly vanished. Perhaps he already bored holding it without any positive response. I let out a relief sigh slowly so that he would not notice. Later, he asked me to hold the umbrella for a while. Confused, but still, I followed his instruction like a programmed robot. Curiousity killed me and so I observed him from the corner of my eyes. He was taking off his outermost jacket. I was like, “What for?” although in my head, crazy thought already started their haunting.
Instinct usually was right and here it happened. My body was gently being wrapped by his jacket. My crazy illogical out-of-mind thought screamed badly inside my head over their triumph. I lost words. Even forgot how to express gratitude within the simple “Thank you”.
I was perplexed. My feelings mixed - happy, touched, shy, hate, anger. The wind seemed to be sidening him when it blew hard out of blue. Coldness attacked me until the black bone; I unconsciously touched my shoulder and tightened the leather jacket to my body. I hugged my body tight. Feel sorry for me, he spread his arms, trying to reach me. With just, “I’m fine”, his move stopped.
“You’ve already done much. Thank you for being my saver,” I whispered. Thinking of it again, I didn’t know of how on earth I could have the courage of saying so. Sensing pinkish blusher arose on my not-so-chubby cheek, I shut my mouth. I swore not to talk anymore with him, at least during this journey, although part of me doubted it.
“Just a small deal tough,” he replied, again, carving a special smile for me. Perhaps my tomato-reddish cheek had turned into dark maroon! His smile indeed melted me!
And after that, I went against my vow by chatting happily with him. Well, he started first. Inwardly, I cursed myself for being so easily melted. Chat filled with his laughter and my smiles went on smoothly that I didn’t realize that we already reached my home.
“Thank you so much. I don’t know what would happen if you’re not there,” I expressed my gratitude once again as he accompanied me to the door of my house.
“Nonsense. Nothing would ever happen to you,” he confidently said. “Nobody would ever dare to touch you, the taekwondo black belt holder.”
“But you dare to,” I smirked at him and he just grinned childishly.
“That’s a different case,” his grin got wider. “Oh well, got to go. See you later.”
“Ah wait!” I accidentally called him.
“Urn?”
“You forget this,” I took off the jacket and handed it to him. “Thank you so much.”
He was looking down to accept the jacket when I naughtily planted a short peck on his cheek and quickly closed the door. I could clearly imagine his startled face with an unconscious smile carved on.
From behind the curtain, I witnessed him leaving with his right palm caressed his pinkish right cheek. Satisfied, I turned off the curtain.
“Guys, you are not starving yet, right?” I asked my younger siblings. They nodded while lying helplessly on the floor of the living room with both hands settled down on their stomach. Luckily, it was better than the Somalian war refugees. I shook my head while smiling lovely at them.
As quick as lightning, I grabbed the apron and started doing my chores. Ten minutes later, I was done and my younger siblings only needed five more minutes to finish them clearly.
THE END
A/N: Well, this version is elaborated from the original writing of SPM. Some scenes are added.
I just love this story that much that I can’t help but to share them. I smiled alone while reading again the story during exam. It’s just so sweet, isn’t it? Well, at least for me :D
