I spent the last weekend at the San Diego Highland Games.
Started on Friday at 10am or so at the rental store. We rented a truck, and lots of sound gear. (We being Dick Jay, Greg Gross and myself.) We headed north to Brengle Terrace Park in the town of Vista. We spent the afternoon setting up the systems on the main stage and the bear garden stage. Dick also help to set up for the free Friday Night concert the Moonlight Amphitheater.
The night concert is a twenty minute concert from each band that will be performing in the games plus the Pasadena Pipe Band, and some Scottish Dancers. After the show ended, we took our gear and stowed it away and headed to our hotel. My assigned room was a smoking room that reeked and burned my throat. I went to the front desk, but they had no more rooms to offer. The night clerk did not seem to care much about my problem. I drove down the road and found another hotel, but it was also booked. As I was driving around looking for a place to stay, Dick called and said Greg offered his room.
His was also a smoking room, but only had a light smell of smoke so I stayed there. I slept on a very saggy and lumpy roll away bed, and woke up with a back ache.
Saturday I set up the four remote systems for dancing, sheep dog trials, athletics and piping competition. Greg ran the Bear Garden stage and Dick Jay the main stage. Greg had Molly's Revenge and Highland Way, Dick Men of Worth and The Browne Sisters with George Cavanaugh. I assisted at both stages and covered for breaks. At the end of the day we covered up the gear and headed back to the hotel. This time I slept with the roll away mattress on the floor.
Sunday was much the same, except I also set up the sound for Kirkin' O' Scotland Service, but did not get to stay and see the service. At the end of the day we spent several hours on tear down and truck loading. We finished just shy of 7pm. I headed home and did a few quick chores, then hit the sack, in a real bed!!
Here are some pictures I took at the
Games.
