This is how I use my journal. Adjust your reading filters accordingly.
Warnings. I will give warnings for consent issues and character death. Even if that messes with my ~artistic vision~. I also try to give them for kinks that I'm aware many people seem to want to be warned for, like bondage... but I know don't warn for everything that could trip someone up. If you aren't sure if my story/stories might contain something you'd rather avoid, just ask. Send me a PM or comment on this post, and I'll let you know if you should skip something. And possibly improve my warnings for the next reader.
Spoilers. I very much understand the desire to see things unspoiled. I use spoiler cuts when discussing recently aired television, recently released movies, and the rare novel review. I don't know where I put the cut off for "recent" exactly. Definitely longer than the current year/season -- and I tend to err on the side of caution. Do I still consider the identity of Luke Skywalker's father a spoiler? Probably not. How about the end of the Harry Potter series, when the books have been finished for awhile but the films are still coming out? Eh. I'd probably cut it. However, I do not treat overall opinions, like "Amazing film!" or "Dear show: seriously?" as spoilers -- in part because, frankly, if I love something, I may not want to read someone else's critical review the same day, or vice versa. So "emotive spoilers" may appear outside of spoiler cuts, so that people who want to talk about the ep/movie/book can tell what sort of post mine will be going in.
I won't promise to spoiler-cut for real life. I do generally remember to cut results, when I know things have a broadcast delay or will be rebroadcast (although, again, I still may not cut emotive spoilers). But if I can be 'spoiled' for something by going to BBC news or reading the Yahoo!headlines on my email homepage ... I don't think it's realistic to complain that someone failed to cut it on DW/LJ. Personally, if it's vitally important for me to see a sporting event/contest/concert completely unspoiled, then social networks on the day of the event are not my friend. The good news here is that I don't tend to watch sports or keep up-to-date on reality/contest shows, so I am unlikely to unintentionally spoil you.
