The vast majority of what Lackey writes is retarded. The Fairy Godmother was a big exception, and its promise is utterly squandered in the two 'sequels'.
Agreed on Lackey's writing. I never liked her very much - and I read her stuff back when I was in high school (and would therefore read *anything* fantasy or scifi-ish, good or bad). Still, tastes differ. I say give something else by her a shot if you think the concept looks good. Then you'll know what you're hating with the force of a thousand suns.
I didn't read The Fairy Godmother, though. I'm glad it's good! I guess even mediocre authors get a chance to shine.
The Fairy Godmother was written for Luna, which is a trashy romance/fantasy label. She's also got One Good Knight and another book out under that label. I think she's switching from her traditional sci-fi/fantasy to try out the trashy romance novel while still maintaining a bit of her fanbase.
I really loved the concept - of "Tradition" affecting the different people in the cast of characters. I mean, you can do SO MUCH with that concept. However, in the second book - she references some unfamiliar (to me, at least) fairy tales. It started out to be somewhat decent, but ended up being kind of trite and predictable at the end - like she just had to tie up some loose ends. I haven't read the third book in the series yet, but because of the Fairy Godmother book I started looking at other books under that label and found out one of my favorite authors has written some items there, too! Under a different last name, though. If you like continent-spanning soap operas, you might like Michelle West's Sun Sword series. Under the Luna

there were a couple places that I was -sure- a lesbian orgy was gonna break out, but I guess that's too "cheesecake." There's like, one competent man in the entire book, and he's an old pensioner.

Hrm, well, if I see something else by her that looks interesting, I'll pick it up to give her the benefit of the doubt... but I'll stay wary!

But yeah, we'll see. I mean, there are plenty of LKH fans still out there reading her turn to crappiness, so tastes definitely vary!
I'm taking a trip to the used bookstore this weekend to trade books in, so we'll see what I get! Eeee, used bookstore day is so exciting! ^_^
