Been watching some relatively recent animated films this week and I have thoughts about them because I am a big fan of animated movies. Spoilers ahead.
Big Hero 6 was the only one of these I'd seen before, it's awesome. I felt sorry for Tadashi, because he's just so nice and helpful and caring and kind and smart that from the beginning I was sitting there thinking about what a shame it was that he was about to die. I loved Baymax. He's the most adorable robot ever. Really aside from the excessive telegraphing of Tadashi's death I don't have any complaints.
Boxtrolls...well, the art style's cute? And the cast was promising. Ben Kingsley, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Steve Blum? I love Steve Blum! But ...Idk. It was sorta bland. The bit where they snuck in an actual rimshot amused me. It was just kinda dull. I wanted it to be better, I couldn't figure out what age group it was aimed at. I wanted to like it bit I probably wouldn't bother watching it again.
I liked it better than the Boxtrolls? XD No, it was cute. Though I feel like there may have been a better way to introduce some of the exposition than to have someone literally read it from a book. And my kneejerk reaction at the beginning was that I didn't want Maria to marry either of the guys. And the music kinda threw me. Mumford and Sons and Radiohead don't really make me think of Mexico, you know? I like the art style though, with the little wooden puppets. It was good. Not the best but good. And in fairness the bit where Manolo finds himself in a legit videogame style boss fight complete with ring of fire, two different stages and many enemies combining into one enormous powerful boss. That was kinda funny. I wish that Joaquim's father had shown up in the Land of the Remembered when Manolo found his family. That could have been interesting.
