Saw Star Trek Into Darkness last night as part of an AMC fan sneak peek screening (miraculously got tickets 2 months ago!). BIG SPOILERS under the cut.
Star Trek came out in Australia a couple of weeks ago, so I've seen it. For me it was a fun action movie, with some epic bromance. BUT the whole thing ends up stinking for me because of the whitewashing. I mean fuck his name is Khan Noonien Singh!!!! In what world is that Benedict Cumerbatch? Why not just rename the character. Its a reboot....
And I think its part of the new series being an action movie rather than sci-fi. Original Trek's Khan was challenging because he was created as the Super Man - smarter, stronger - and NOT WHITE. As they tried to show in this movie - he's also to some extent, the same as Kirk, yet in 2012 apparently that means being exactly the same.
The next one won't have whales, because they don't fit in an action movie. And if they do, they'll be white whales. *sigh*
I agree, it's really fun and had all the bromance! I just wish it didn't have that part. Benedict's part was... basically not needed to be that? IDK. I don't think he brought anything super special to it.

Exactly. If you think about it, the original was a bit deeper that way -- hey, genetically engineered guy who's not white, who's charismatic and cunning! Here it's like they could be Academy pals or something (and I thought for a moment they actually wouldn't be enemies or would unite, but guess not.
oh god white whales ahahaha. <33 They'll be dolphins with laser beams on their heads. Because of the ACTION!!!11!!
