Saw it twice, IMAX 3D on Friday night, regular 2D on Saturday morning.
Man of Steel (SPOILERS including the ending)
I kind of really liked it? Like there were pacing and editing issues (apparently the original cut of the film was 3 hours long, which makes a lot of sense with the pacing, jesus) but as a Superman fan I enjoyed it. Here's a
review I agree with (love the call out to Mark Waid's review. ILU Mark Waid but you wrote Kingdom Come. lolololol). What amuses me is that it seems to be a film either people love or hate, which I get. I don't understand comparing it to the original Christopher Reeve movies because they have nothing to do with the storylines or the Superman portrayed -- that's basically pre-Crisis Superman and this is the John Byrne '86 post-Crisis Superman. Noticed a lot of the comic fans liked that they stuck to the modern comics and not the previous Bronze Age.
I love the original Superman films. I do. But sometimes
they don't hold up. And that version of Superman hasn't existed for years.
What's interesting is that Henry Cavill supposedly based his interpretation of Kal/Clark off The Death of Superman/Return of Superman storylines, as well as Superman: Red Son and Superman/Batman: The Search for Kryptonite. Which makes a hell of a lot of sense. It also makes me adore his Superman/Clark/Kal (fave movie wise, TV-wise gotta be Dean Cain, yo. MEMORIES.)
(Also, can we talk about what a big geek Cavill is? In a happy, positive way. He was playing World of Warcraft and didn't pick up the phone when Zack Snyder called him because he couldn't pause the game. He plays Skyrim and reading fantasy novels til morning hours! His dad set up PCs for Henry and his 4 brothers to play network gaming oh god I CAN'T, I CAN'T.
...also he'd want to play Bizarro himself and fight Doomsday or Braniac I CAN'T WITH YOU. OKAY.
omg so happy to see him do well aaahhh)
I LOVED Lois in this movie, holy shit. I also loved that she figured out Clark's identity early on (which naturally people are pissed about so bwahahaha, DEAL WITH IT) and their relationship was interesting. I wish she had been given more to do, but basically everyone who's not Superman himself had a small part so. RECTIFY THIS IN THE NEXT ONE.
It'd be nice if there were some lighter moments (basically just like the last 5 minutes of the movie. CLARK DISGUISE AHHH.) but at the same time, don't revert to the past and go overly campy. It's tricky. People don't like Superman because he's too "good" or "campy" but if he's serious he's too dark. This is what happens when WB takes a look at TDK and TDKR and thinks, "NOLAN-IZE EVERYTHING DARK DARK RAARRGHH!" Critics loved Superman Returns because it reminded them of the old films but the fans didn't because, well, he's not like that anymore (also he basically just lifts things.). And I LOVED that movie. But in comparison to this, no.
Also worried since if they're fast tracking the film for next year, the script might go by the wayside again. ugghh.
I would've liked more interaction between Superman and the people of Metropolis before the all out slugfest at the end, but when you have beings with that power, if you're going to go for 'realism' (or Nolan/Goyer's brand of realism), everything would get smashed to shit. Superman fought Doomsday for miles across several states before their final showdown in Metropolis (which was fucked up after, at least, enough for them to use the excuse of Clark Kent being trapped in rubble for weeks while Superman was 'dead'). Really not surprised that it was all messed up. (Granted, the gravity/terraforming machines they ripped off of Superman: Earth One did not do the extensive damage that they did in the film, but whatever.) Hoping they have some deleted scenes.
Also I have no problem at all with the ending? He does try not to kill but he's made a canon exception before, and that was Zod. So having it happen here -- and having him destroy the last connection to Krypton/his past in order to protect humanity/his future -- was heart wrenching, exhausting, and painful. I really hope they explore more of that in the sequel (if they do one!). I think Clark went into exile after killing Zod in the original comic so... we'll see.
Randomly, I loved all the Krypton scenes and weird ass shit/aliens because that's how it fucking is. IT'S ALIEN. (omg Kelex aaahhh).
The movie was fucking intense and exhausting, man. Especially the first go as our seats were super close in IMAX. I was able to enjoy it more the second go and notice the little easter eggs (Supergirl! Wayne satellite! Carol Ferris! More
here!).
uhhh I might edit this later but probably not so if you have any questions, let me know. Sorry for the ramble/if it's unclear.
I JUST REALLY LIKE CLARK KENT OKAY I WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY AND SOMEONE GIVE HENRY AN APPLE PIE, THE POOR MAN.
