One Sentence Challenge: Van/Wendy [GxS]

DISCLAIMER: GxS is not mine, and none of it will ever be.

#01 - Walking
When the rain stopped, Van stood up and continued walking down the worn dirt path, with Wendy and her suitcase following close behind.

#02 - Waltz
She did her best to keep her smile from growing into a joyous laugh as she twirled across the dance floor, her wide, lacy skirt spreading out and her unrestrained red hair whipping into her face, and spun back into his thin arms.

#03 - Wishes
Though they had a mutual quest, they had different wishes; Van wanted to avenge his bride, and Wendy just wanted to see her brother’s face again.

#04 - Wonder
Even though she had seen him eat many times during their travels, Wendy always wondered why Van insisted on smothering his meals with every available condiment - and more importantly, how he could eat them in front of her without twitching.

#05 - Worry
As the storm raged on outside the cave, Wendy could feel her insides knotting with worry as she glanced at Van, still fast asleep and just recently weakened by his last confrontation.

#06 - Whimsy
When she left Evergreen with Van, she also left all her childish whimsies and fears behind in favor of looking for her brother with a strange man she only recently got to know.

#07 - Waste/Wasteland
Wendy knew that the wilderness of the Planet of Endless Illusion was no hospitable place, especially after learning that Van had been traversing the deserted wasteland in search for the man with the claw, and had even collapsed due to hunger - probably many times, not just in front of her.

#08 - Whiskey and rum
Wendy made a mental note to remind the El Dorado folks again that Van was very, very, very prone to hangovers, which was why he preferred to drink milk instead.

#09 - War
For a fleeting moment, as he and Dann of Thursday dodged shots from Saudade of Sunday’s rifle while dueling high in the atmosphere, Van thought of Wendy and what she could be doing down below to help in their plan.

#10 - Weddings
He sighed sadly and stared into space as he recounted the events that had cut his and Helena’s wedding short and led him to his quest for revenge, while Wendy brought him a glass of milk and listened to his story.

#11 - Birthday
There was so much about him that she still didn’t know, like his birthday and his hobbies besides piloting his armor, but with everything that had been going on around them and their quest she just couldn’t find the time to ask him about these things and more.

#12 - Blessing
Although many people placed considerable prestige on the pilots of the Original Seven and often marveled at the feats he accomplished with Dann, Van was all too aware that it was a blessing and a curse, and he was pretty sure that Wendy also knew that, even if he didn’t tell her directly.

#13 - Bias
As the armor battle went on before the cheering crowd and Van’s opponent put up a good fight, Wendy couldn’t help but be more biased towards her traveling companion, which was obviously to be expected of her.

#14 - Burning
She could feel her face burning as her temperature climbed and stayed, but also felt something else draped on top of her and realized that he had just lent her his tuxedo to use as a blanket while she rested.

#15 - Breathing
Van leaned in a bit closer and listened to Wendy’s steady breathing, and let out a long sigh of relief.

#16 - Breaking
As Dann of Thursday lay broken and defeated in the snow, she sprinted towards the armor, calling out Van’s name and ignoring the fact that she was already being assaulted by the chilly winds that blew her way and made Kameo retreat into his shell.

#17 - Belief
Even as her other companions anxiously talked among themselves, Wendy still firmly believed that he would return from his fight alive and continued to watch the skies.

#18 - Balloon
Instead of hitching a ride in one of the smaller balloons, they escaped to a huge blimp that was like a floating fancy hotel and restaurant, trying to mingle with the elite crowd despite the fact that neither of them looked remotely affluent enough to pass.

#19 - Balcony
She almost jumped when she realized that he was standing behind her in the doorway of the balcony, partly camouflaged by the black curtains that billowed in the night breeze.

#20 - Bane
The clawed man was the bane of their existences, as this mysterious stranger had made his terrible mark on both their lives by taking their loved ones from them - and in Van’s case, taking his loved one’s life.

#21 - Quiet
For a change, everything was quiet, and even as she turned to face him, who walked towards the balcony rail and leaned against it, staring up into the stars, neither of them said anything.

#22 - Quirks
Sometimes, Wendy just got tired of constantly explaining Van’s unusual condiment fetish, his substitution of milk for alcohol and even the fact that he constantly wore his wedding tuxedo and hat to people they met.

#23 - Question
When Priscilla asked Wendy if she liked Van, for a moment Wendy was at a loss for words - after all, she did like him, but if she simply said it outright, people would react and interpret her answer in so many different ways that even she would never understand.

#24 - Quarrel
After a brief shouting match reduced her to tears, he tripped all over his words trying to apologize to her and tried to ignore the disapproving glares from her pet tortoise.

#25 - Quitting
Most girls Wendy’s age would have quit the quest to find the elusive clawed man after breaking a nail or stubbing a toe, and Van sort of admired how Wendy stuck by his side after all this time and all the trouble they ended up getting into along the way.

#26 - Jump
Gusts of air blew into her face as Dann leapt into the sky, Van’s amplified taunts echoing in her ears as he challenged another armor pilot.

#27 - Jester
In all the time she knew him, she never heard him crack a single joke or even laugh, but of course, she understood why.

#28 - Jousting
She winced and closed her eyes for a split second as Priscilla’s Brownie unleashed its Fairy Stab against Dann of Thursday, but quickly opened her eyes again after hearing a big whoop from the crowd and seeing the evasive move Van had to employ to keep Dann from getting skewered.

#29 - Jewel
When he first saw Kameo strung around her neck, he almost mistook the tortoise for a jewel of sorts, until Kameo stuck his head out and stared at Van, who flinched in surprise.

#30 - Just
Sure, saving her town wasn’t initially in his itinerary, but she was glad nonetheless that he had even a little inkling of justice within him, despite being out for himself.

#31 - Smirk
The closest Van had to a smile was a smirk that he usually wore whenever he had the upper hand in a battle and when he won, and Wendy had to admit that it was sort of cute, or handsome, as cute wasn’t exactly a word she would associate with a man like him.

#32 - Sorrow
She could only imagine the pain and sorrow he experienced when he watched Helena die before his very eyes; after all, her brother was only kidnapped, and there was the chance that he was still alive.

#33 - Stupidity
There were times when Wendy Garret was the only one who didn’t think that he and his grueling quest to find an elusive figure were stupid.

#34 - Serenade
As they were serenaded by a string quartet over their meal, Wendy glanced at Van, who was concentrating more on drowning his food in condiments than the music, and could not imagine him serenading her anytime soon; not only were they not lovers, but there were more important things on their minds than such.

#35 - Sarcasm
She wanted to tell him that nothing good ever came out of yelling sarcasms to turbulent storms.

#36 - Sordid
The last inn they passed by was so sordid that they decided to just take their chances out in the badlands.

#37 - Soliloquy
Wendy caught him one morning soliloquizing his dearest goal over his breakfast.

#38 - Sojourn
Their last stay at a tavern was drastically cut short when Van lost his temper and almost slit the throat of a man who mentioned the Clawed Man in his conversation, and only Wendy managed to keep Van from killing anyone out of blind rage and escort him out calmly.

#39 - Share
They shook their heads and politely refused simultaneously when the folks at the opposite table offered them a bottle of whiskey.

#40 - Solitary
Drawing the shades and squinting as the dawn streamed into her window, she saw Van perched on a rock not too far away from the place they were staying, facing the rising sun.

#41 - Nowhere
She wiped the sweat off her forehead and glanced ahead, seeing nothing but a vast expanse of desert, and when she looked back, she let out an exasperated sigh after seeing her companion sprawled on the sand and muttering something she could not understand.

#42 - Neutral
Whenever Van got himself into trouble - or was the trouble, Wendy often found herself inadvertently taking his side despite preferring to stay out of it - after all, they had no choice but to stick with each other through it all.

#43 - Nuance
He stared at her for a second and wondered if she had grown quite a bit ever since he first saw her in Evergreen, and chances were, she had, and “matured” was probably a more appropriate term.

#44 - Near
“We’re almost there, Van…don’t faint now!”

#45 - Natural
“Is it really natural for a tortoise to be hanging around your neck like that all the time?”

#46 - Horizon
And when the sun slowly began to emerge, bathing them in the morning light, Wendy thought she had an idea for another title to add to his growing list of aliases; after all, “Van of the Dawn” sounded much better than “Hangover Van”, which he received for obvious reasons.

#47 - Valiant
She had also heard some people in her hometown referring to him as “Valiant Van”, for having saved everyone from the rowdy folks terrorizing the place, even if they did have to push him a bit to do it.

#48 - Virtuous
“Yes, Van did take good care of me while we were there.”

#49 - Victory
It was all over, but it took a great deal of energy from them and they instantly plopped into their beds, fast asleep and leaving their friends to party downstairs.

#50 - Defeat
“I’m sorry…Wendy.”
