ugh, the picture of dorian gray. i really didn't like that book. i couldn't even finish it. one flew over the cuckoo's nest is good, if you haven't read it yet and can get your hands on it.
really? I've heard good things about it too. I suppose I'll give it a try, since it's around and not too long. Can't be as bad as some of the russian lit I had to read last semester.
a heartbreaking work of staggering genius, dave eggers killing yourself to live, chuck klosterman a long way down, nick hornby the areas of my expertise, john hodgman
dammit! i wish i had not sent most of my books home with my mother! otherwise i would have more suggestions! oh well, perhaps when i go home i will comment again.
I can't remember if you've already read "Good Omens" or not (co-written with Neil Gaiman). If not, that seems like a good starting point for many people. As for the Discworld series, I was hooked from the very first book ("The Colour of Magic"), although his style has changed quite a bit since then and many fans say they couldn't really get into the first one. You could see if you like the first book, then if you don't, try something like "Guards! Guards!" or "Mort" which are a bit further down the line, but stand well on their own, with no need to know any characters or events from earlier books.
the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K Hamilton is nifty, but... not exactly in the same category as the other books on your list *grins*. Hmm... neither is the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, but I recommend both. And considering I don't really read to many hard copy /books/ anymore (yay, fanfiction!), I can't think of much else at the moment...
