As for why Thomas? Well, here's where I get geeky. 'Edward' and 'Alphonse' are both very classic, very victorian-era names. So I looked through my notes about famous alchemists, and found a little note about "Thomas Aquinas". Therefore, Thomas!

As for why ED chose Thomas, I have no idea. XDD
