Genre: Romance
Summary: Onew was Key's only exception.

Kibum was merely six when his parents filed for a divorce and he didn’t get the privilege of choosing who he wanted to be in custodian of for the rest of his life. The judge made his choice and decided that perhaps his mom would do a better job of raising him. Kibum had no say in it. What could he do? After all, he was only six.

But deep down, he knew everything started going wrong the moment his mom brought a man home a few months back where they started kissing on the couch. A man who was, apparently, not his dad.

He pitied his dad and hated his mom. The night when he moved out, Kibum witnessed his dad crying for the very first time. Kibum didn’t know why but he cried along.

Kibum remember the times when his dad would bring him out to the sea on their private yacht and spend their entire day fishing while his mother prepares meal in the cabin kitchen. She often prepared ice cold lemonade for them to quench their thirst under the scorching sun. When Kibum got tired, he would fall asleep on his mom’s lap while they enjoy the sea breeze and the picturesque sunset.

It used to be a weekly routine and Kibum always looked forward to spending the weekend with his parents. But it subsequently disappeared when his Dad got sent to New York for his job. It wouldn’t be the bad if he was sent there for a few short months, but he had to go over for at least a year. “Wait for me, I’ll be back. I’ll come back as frequently as I can.” He promised. And he kept his promise.

But she didn’t.
(I love you forever was her promise.)

Kibum stopped believing in love.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Many years passed with Kibum witnessing his mom bringing back tons of different guys. She was often drunk and sometimes would even yell at him for no rhyme or reason. (She never once yelled at him before.) The men that she brought home were usually after her money, it was obvious. But she didn’t bother.

Kibum grew to hate his mom more than ever.

Reality was always crushing so hard on Kibum; he evolved into a rather cold-hearted man over the years. He stopped talking to his mom and she knew he would never forgive her.

Kibum has a tight grip on reality.
Love is an illusion and it doesn’t last.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Kibum attended the most prestigious high school in the whole of Korea. Only kids who are from extremely rich families were able to get in. The only other way to get into the school was to be very intelligent or talented as only twenty scholarships were offered to the whole nation each year.

Being in a school filled with mostly superficial and materialistic people made Kibum hate his life even more. But he worked his hardest nonetheless. In fact, he excelled in everything that he does. He is president of the Student Union and is the lead skier in the school’s Water Ski Club. He was also part of the top five per cent of top scorers in the entire school.

Not only that, he is also musically-inclined. He plays the piano, the violin and the drums. He could sing and dance really well too. He joined the school’s dance society not too long back and made a real friend and he’s forever grateful for his existence.

His name is Lee Taemin.

Kibum would never sing of love.
Love is a waste of time.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Taemin is two years younger than Kibum. His parents own many of the properties in Korea and are the founder of Elite Dance Academy. But Taemin was never too proud because of that. When Kibum first met him, Taemin was a little shy. But when he witnessed Taemin’s dance moves, he was appalled and amazed. Whoa was all that filled his head.

He walked up to Taemin while he was resting and the two clicked really well. It’s been a while since Kibum felt this way about a person and he could feel that Taemin makes a genuine friend. They exchanged numbers and hung out together during their breaks. Taemin became his best friend. And the talked about everything in the world, other than Kibum’s past. (Kibum felt embarrassed of himself and his mom and refuses to tell anybody about her scandalous past.) But he loves Taemin really much. Like a younger brother he always dreamed of having.

For once, he felt like a human once again.
Kibum began to like life a little more.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Many girls were swoon over Kibum as he’s Mr. Perfect. In fact, he’s so gorgeous that even guys are falling for him. But Kibum vowed never to fall in love. He rejected anyone and everyone that confessed to him but have sex with them anyway. He didn’t feel bad at all because he was frankly not interested in anyone of them and he was just fulfilling his needs (but this stopped after he knew Taemin). His life revolves around his responsibilities in the various clubs and societies, music and Taemin. That’s all.

He doesn’t know why Taemin mattered so much in his life but he felt this unspoken responsibility he has for him. He felt that it was his duty to take good care of Taemin so much so that he even cooks for him. Oh yes, Kibum cooks really well too.

Kibum guides Taemin in his school work whenever he needed help and he did all these on his free will. Taemin could never appreciate Kibum’s existence more than he already does. They were so attached to each other; Taemin began calling Kibum ‘Umma’ instead of the usual ‘Hyung’. Kibum would do everything and anything for Taemin. Just because he loves him that much as a younger brother.

The obvious yet true happiness he felt around Taemin makes him feel alive.
Taemin is and forever will be his happy bubble.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Unfortunately for Kibum, he was down with measles for three weeks after a trip to Alaska. Apparently his skin condition couldn’t adapt exactly well and thus he had to skip school for three weeks.

During those three weeks, Taemin delivered school work and announcements to Kibum daily so that he could at least know what was going on in school. Not only that, Taemin learnt how to make chicken soup and porridge and made it a point to bring a flask of either to Kibum every day.

But more interestingly, Taemin is always talking about a new friend he made in the Dance Society. The way Taemin described him garnered lots of interest from Kibum as he sounded perfect.

“Umma, you know, I think you’ll like him. When you come back to school next week, I’ll introduce the both of you. He’s amazing.”

Kibum simply smiled as Taemin fed him the last spoonful of the porridge.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

The time has finally come for Kibum to return to school. It was also finally time to meet the amazing guy that Taemin seem so like a lot.

He stood at his locker as he slowly picked out the books for the lessons. It was then Taemin brought him over.

“Kibum hyung, meet Jinki hyung.” Taemin said excitedly.

They all didn’t know what happened within that split second but there was a moment of awkward silence.

“Uh hi, I’m Jinki. Lee Jinki. I just transferred over.” Jinki extended his hand to initiate a handshake.

“H-Hi. Kim Kibum. I uh, I heard about you. Hi Jinki.” Kibum shook Jinki’s hand. He could feel a chill run down his spine. It was then the bell rang which meant that it was the start of classes.

That was weird, but I liked it.
Kibum thought to himself as he smiled faintly.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Kibum found himself distracted the entire day as he thought about Jinki. He was wondering how anyone could look so perfect (not realizing that he is part of the ‘anyone’ as well). He chuckled to himself for a moment or two as he remembers when Jinki almost tripped while rushing to class. What a dork.

But reality pulled him back when the dismissal bell rang. Wait, he isn’t supposed to love, is he?

This cannot be real.
Wake up, Kibum.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Kibum walked listlessly to the cafeteria to meet Taemin and not quite surprisingly, Jinki was there too. Why the heck is he smiling to me like this? Kibum thought. He felt his heart skip beats. He could also feel that his face lit up the moment he saw Jinki and he couldn’t feel anymore embarrassed.

Despite having his favorite ramen in front of him, Kibum was not touching his food at all. He found himself staring a little too obviously at Jinki and he felt grossed out by his strange behavior. But he really couldn’t help it. Jinki accidentally caught him a few times and just gave that same charming smile again and again. Damn it, Kibum. Quit staring.

“Kibum umma, why are you so quiet today? Are you feeling okay?” questioned a very baffled Taemin.

“Oh, no no. I’m fine. I’ll head back to class. See you guys later.”

Kibum left with very mixed feelings.

Maybe living in illusion for a while is fine.
Perhaps.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

It’s been a month of Kibum, Taemin and Jinki as a group. Kibum still wouldn’t talk to Jinki much and that baffled Jinki. He didn’t know if it was Kibum’s problem or worse, his problem. He asked Taemin but Taemin told him he was just a little paranoid since Kibum is rather friendly, as Taemin sees it. But Jinki begged to differ.

Does he despise me because I’m not from a wealthy family?
(Jinki got in the school through the scholarship scheme.)

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Due to an upcoming Summer Dance Championship, Taemin has been missing loads of time with Kibum and Jinki as he made full use of his extra time to practice more since his dance coach expected a lot out of him.

One particular afternoon, while Jinki and Kibum were eating their lunch as per normal, Jinki suddenly lifted his head up and stared at Kibum.

“Yah, why are you staring at me like that?”

“Uhm, Kibum. There’s been something that I want to ask you. I thought maybe you would like to meet me after school by the school gate? We can walk home together and talk at the same time.”

Kibum hesitated for a moment and thought that Jinki was going to interrogate him and ask him why he is so weird and always staring at him. But he agreed nonetheless.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

The dismissal bell finally rang after what seemed like eternity. Kibum packed his stuff and headed to the school gate only to find Jinki already there, waiting for him. Honestly, he was quite impressed because he is usually the earlier one whenever he meets anyone, including Taemin.

“Hey, Kibum.”

“Hey. Have you waited for a long time? I’m sorry.”

“No it’s fine I just came not too long ago too. Besides, you’re still early.”Jinki gave that signature smile of his again. Kibum doesn’t know why but it affects him a lot. Maybe a little too much.

“Why do you keep staring at me like that?” Jinki asked abruptly that caught Kibum by surprise.

“Oh I- uh, I...don’t know. Why do you keep smiling to me then?”

“Kibum...I smile to everybody.”

“Oh yeah, true. Okay fine. You asked me to meet you to talk about this?”

“No no no, I wanted to ask you, do you not like me or something? I mean, the way you are to Taemin is the total opposite of how you are to me.”

“No it’s not that Jinki. In fact, I think I like you. I just don’t know, just come with me.” Kibum grabbed Jinki’s right wrist as he brought him to the Starbucks right down the street.

They settled down with a cup of drink in each of their hands.

Before he actually realized it, Kibum was opening his heart to Jinki. He was actually telling everything about him and his family to Jinki and he didn’t feel embarrassed at all. He felt no pressure and he knew that Jinki will not judge him for whatever happened. Kibum felt Jinki arms around him as the tears run down his cheeks. He felt the warmth that he felt when he was a child. The warmth he felt when his parents were still pretty much in love. The warmth he misses so badly.

And I've always lived like this, keeping a comfortable distance.
And up until now I've sworn to myself that I'm content with loneliness.
Because none of it was ever worth the risk.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

“Are you feeling better already?” Jinki asked as offered Kibum his last piece of tissue as they walk down the empty alley.

“Yeah thank you Jinki. And I’m sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing, Kibum? None of these are your fault.”

“I’m sorry that you have to hear me rant like this. It’s just, I’ve been keeping it to myself all these years and I haven’t told anyone about it at all. Not even Taemin. I hate my mother Jinki; I really hate her so much. And I really thank you for not judging me for my horrendous past.”

“You have every right to hate her and stuff but Kibum, she’s your mother. She loves you and you know that. You told me how it used to be like when your parents took you out to the sea, didn’t you? Remember the moments where she cared. She loves you Kibum, trust me. And she always will.”

“I don’t know, Jinki. I don’t. Things are just never the same anymore.”

“Talk to her.”

“No. I vowed never to.”

“You vowed never to tell anyone all of these but you did anyway, didn’t you?”

“I-I don’t know.” It was then Jinki pressed his index finger onto Kibum’s pink moisten lips. They exchanged a glance that Kibum never experienced before but yet he knew he was enjoying every single second of it.

Before he knew it, his face was getting closer and closer to Jinki’s and he could smell the slight mint smell on Jinki. Their lips pressed against one another’s and they could hardly breathe. Kibum grabbed onto Jinki’s neck and held him closer to himself. He could still feel his tears running down his cheeks but he couldn’t care less.

But darling, you are the only exception.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

Jinki and Kibum went back to school as per normal the next day, just a little more intimate. Taemin smiled slyly at the two of them, leaving them to blush while he teased them.

“I see, now I have an appa too! Jinki appa! Kibum umma!”

“Yah, Taemin ah! Stop laughing at us! Don’t think we don’t know about that Minho guy you’ve been stalking!” Kibum retaliated.

“I don’t stalk Minho. He’s mine.” Taemin confidently rebutted.

“Seems like our little boy is now a man!” Jinki teased as they all laughed it off.

“Oh by the way, Taemin ah, congratulations on the championships! You were dazzling on stage!”

“Thanks! Heh. Okay Minho is over there I’m just going to talk to him. See you guys later!”

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

“Have you decided whether to talk to her or not yet?” Jinki asked as he looked into Kibum’s brown orbs.

“Nope. I don’t intend to.” Kibum answered stubbornly as he pouted.

“Why not, Kibum? I mean, she’s your mom.”

“She is my mom. But she cheated on my dad and ruined my happiness.”

“She tried compensating, you wouldn’t let her. Besides, she gave birth to you and that gave me my lifelong happiness.” Jinki said cheerily, trying to appease a not so happy Kibum.

Kibum couldn’t help but laugh at how cheesy Jinki could get.

“Come on, Kibum. Do it……for me? Please?”

“Fine, but you have to come with me.”

“Sure, why not?”

“I hate you, Jinki.”

“I love you more, Kibum.”

“Whatever.” Kibum smiled as he gave Jinki a quick peck as they rushed off for their classes.

ᵡᵡᵡᵡᵡ

It was the first time Kibum fell in love. He fell into the trap he refused to succumb into all these years. But this time round, it was different. He loves Jinki. Too much for words and actions to describe. Jinki loves him more than he loves himself and that’s all that he needed.

And Kibum’s on his way to believing in love.
(And he eventually did.)

(He eventually forgave his mom too, all thanks to the love of his life; Lee Jinki.)

Jinki was Kibum’s only exception.
