Sweet dreams;

Jinki graduated from university and just got hired as a legal consultant in Seoul’s top law firm.

His parents ‘passed away’ a few years ago after the plane they were on had a major glitch and crashed right into the mountains in Maldives. Well, that was what the police claimed but Jinki didn’t buy it.

He believes that his parents are still alive somewhere, in fact, he was certain that they were still alive. It’s the reason why he’d like to travel to Maldives as soon as he could save enough. But people around him were all worried that he had lost it and tried changing his mind, but he would let nothing change his mind.

He made it his life’s mission to search for his missing parents.

***

Jinki woke up like any other morning. “Another day of work, another day worth of salary in my fund. 5,600,000 won left to go.”Jinki sighed as he continued his mental calculations of some miscellaneous expenses till his text message tone struck his attention.

“Get a cup of vanilla latte from the café down the road behind the office before you get over. Mr. Lee’s instructions. Times café.”

Obediently, Jinki did as he was told. He left his house an hour early because he had never been to that particular café. When his boss wanted something done, he meant do it without any mistakes.

***

It was only 7.30 am, the streets were pretty empty. Jinki pushed the door open carefully, fearing that the bell attached to it may disrupt others’. He walked towards the empty cashier.

Jinki stood there patiently for the first few minutes. But the clock is ticking away and if he weren’t served anytime soon, he would definitely receive an earful when he reaches the office.

He reached for the reception bell and pressed it twice. A guy around his age hurried out of the wooden door at the back of the counter.

“Sorry to keep you waiting sir! How may I help you?” The barista asked too enthusiastically for Jinki's liking.

“Uh, one vanilla latte please.”Jinki answered, uncomfortably.

“What size, sir?”

“I think I’ll take the regular. Thank you.”Jinki quickly replied as he started to blush. He paid and hurriedly left the shop, accidentally forgetting to thank the barista for his service.

He didn’t know why but he smiled.
(So did the barista behind the counter.)

***

So, buying a cup of vanilla latte for Mr. Lee has unknowingly become Jinki’s duty. How on earth did that even happen? Jinki thought to himself. He didn’t exactly mind it though. After all, it’s just a few meters away from the office. He could always grab some breakfast too.

There’s one problem though. For at least half a day now, the overly enthusiastic barista has been stuck in his head. Something very rare that is actually occurring to Jinki. He didn’t really know why, but he was just going to brush this feeling off.

It doesn’t matter, does it?

***

Jinki has grown accustomed to the routine he practices daily.

Every morning, Jinki will be at Times Café to get Mr. Lee’s regular sized vanilla latte. At the same time, he’ll have his breakfast which consists of a cup of earl grey and bagel with cream cheese at the café. It went on for the next few months.

What Jinki did not realize was that, somewhere in between the cycle, he’d become friends with the barista.

His name is Kim Kibum.

***

Kibum is 20 this year. He’s currently studying in a night school and is working to earn extra income to provide for his own education. His parents passed away since young and his only family was his grandmother. His grandmother got really sick and passed away last summer. Kibum is also currently staying in his parent’s apartment which they bought a long time ago. That’s the only thing his parents left him. Kibum doesn’t blame them and misses them a lot.

Wait, since when did Jinki learnt so much about Kibum?

He has never known anyone this well before.

(He pretty much kept to himself majority of the time)

***

It was a Friday morning and as usual, Jinki walked into the quiet café where Kibum worked at.

“Hey Jinki. Same thing today?

“Yeah, thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Oh Jinki, My friend gave me two tickets to a show premier tonight. He has something on last minute and I have no one to go with. So I was thinking, would you like to come with me?”

“Oh…uh, yeah sure. What time and where do I meet you?”

“I’ll meet you after work at 8pm? You can come down here or I could walk over to your workplace.” Kibum answered delightfully.

“It’s fine, I’ll come over. I’ll see you later then.”

“Yeah sure. Here, your drink. See you later, Jinki.”Kibum passed the cup of coffee to Jinki, accidentally touching Jinki’s hand.

Jinki could feel his heart racing. His face started to blush and he felt really warm. Little did he know, Kibum (who was shyly smiling at him), felt exactly the same.

(To be continued)
