I think doing that might be a good reason to invest in a nice telescopic lens.

Did you know that immigrants used to take pictures of funerals to send back home to family overseas? I don't know that my family ever did it, but I know it was done.

I think if the guests didn't know ahead of time that there would be a photographer, it could be seen as really invasive. I personally do not want to be photographed in my grief. I think you would have to be really, really respectful, and that would difficult to do.
