Speaking from experience of driving that route in the winter, the snow and ice is pretty pathetic. Or non-existent. If you're on an interstate, there's really nothing to worry about. Just drive home and tell your dad he's a sissified Californian who's afraid of a snowflake or a temperature below 40 degrees.
Mildly BadIdea, unless you're good at martial arts. :) I'd probably second one of the more assertive suggestions, as bearddevil and magicpacket suggested.
I like MagicMonkeyBoy's idea of making him pay the difference if he wants you to fly and you'd rather drive. I also don't lie to my parents and would just tell them I'm driving home because it is a better use of my money. However from the stories I've heard it seems your dad is special and you probably know best.
I've never driven that route in winter but in my experience driving in the snow is more a psychological challenge than a physical one. You can always get practice before the trip by taking Stephen to play in the snow at one of the passes around here. You'll need to learn to drive in snow sometime. Last winter was unusually dry, I expect this winter there will be snow in the city at least once or twice.
In my two years up here, there's only been one case where it's been mildly hard to drive on I-5. It froze up pretty good just north of Portland, and traffic basically came to a standstill (or slow enough that I wasn't worried about the drive being hard - just slow.)
If you have the patience to deal with getting down to SF by car, go for it.
