Appearance
Kazuma Kuwabara is not what most people would call attractive. His curly red hair (which can best be summed up by the words "Rick Astley"), his long narrow face, a body always a little too big for his age... well, he was quite awkward throughout much of his adolescence. 6'3" at the age of 14, and still growing like a weed, he's tall and muscular, and thinks nothing of walking around with lumps on his head, or black eyes and bruises, since he does love a good fight. He wears a school uniform of a different, lighter and more vibrant shade of blue than most of his peers, visual representation of his rebellious side.

Personality
Despite his reputation as a street thug, Kuwabara is a caring decent guy with a strong moral code and sense of justice. And he loves kittens. He will never hit a girl, even if she's attacking him, and he won't kill or permanently hurt anyone who isn't either threatening those he cares about or inherently cruel. He will however, seek a good fight anywhere he can. Kuwabara is stubborn, almost stupidly so at times, and though he shows rare moments of genius in battle, he tends to come off as an idiot much of the time and serves as the easy butt of far too many jokes. He'll do absolutely anything for his friends, whether it's singlehandedly taking on an army or taking a hell of a beating without fighting back.

Abilities
In Manhattan, Kuwabara will not be able to cut through dimensional boundaries. He will still have his spirit sword, at least in the form it took during the Dark Tournament arc, but his ability to use it for extended amounts of time will be severely limited... let's just say we've put a cap on his spiritual energy that's much lower than it should be? Physically, Kuwabara is extremely sturdy; tall, muscular, and able to get back up after blows that would topple a stand of trees. Unfortunately, it never helped him beat Yusuke... but we digress. His physical abilities won't be significantly weakened, and if anyone wants to start a fight, Kuwbara would LOVE to take you on! Name your time and place, and he'll kick your ass!

Weaknesses
Kuwabara will do absolutely anything to protect his friends, or pretty girls. His utter disregard for his own safety when they're on the line is probably the closest thing he has to a fatal weakness. Other weaknesses include a tendency to act without thinking, an inability to bring out his full strength or intelligence anytime everything's not on the line, his sister (& her mean right hook), and... Miss Yukina. Though Kuwabara's outrageous brand of chivalry did always mask a slightly lecherous instantaneous interest in pretty girls, he fell in love with the lovely ice apparition at first sight, and now reserves his ardent declarations of love for her alone... hopefully, he won't weaken in that resolve when he realizes he's in a different world... with all these new kind and beautiful girls... None as wonderful as his Yukina though, surely!

History
Kazuma was, presumably, raised at least as much by his chain-smoking older sister as by their parents, who are non-present during the course of the series. Some people would argue that she didn't go about it very well, as he's widely considered a delinquent and street thug. Her bizarre combination of pummeling, intimidation, threats, bribes, and occasional unconditional kindness were a bit unorthodox, but he's turned out pretty well.

Kuwabara is the toughest guy at Sarayashiki Junior High. Or that's what he'd say if you asked him, despite the fact that he's never managed to beat his rival, Yuusuke Urameshi, in a fight. He was an ordinary tough-guy fourteen-year old... well, sort of..., apart from a slight psychic ability that enabled him to sense the presence of ghosts and spirits, though he couldn't see them. And he might have remained that way, if it weren't for a bizarre series of events involving Yuusuke's death and revival, after which Yuusuke had to serve as Spirit Detective, Spirit World's agent in keeping demons from causing catastrophe on Earth.

Kuwabara's 6th sense started bothering him, and he went to the renowned psychic Genkai for help, getting there and discovering Yuusuke was already there, trying to catch a demon out to learn Genkai's secret techniques. After his help in this case, Kuwabara just continued helping Yuusuke, who, though still considered a rival, was also fast becoming a best friend. Kuwabara gained the ability to manifest his spirit energy as a weapon, namely, a sword, and later to manipulate the shape and length of his weapon.

From this point on Kuwabara's life was a series of battles with far graver consequences than the street brawls he'd always sought out. He, along with Hiei and Kurama, two demons involved in a previous case of Yuusuke's, travels to the demon world for Yuusuke's next case where they narrowly defeat the four Saint Beasts. Kuwabara isn't particularly enthusiastic about another case, but the second he sees the face of the beautiful ice apparition needing rescue, he's borrowing travel money from his sister and dashing out the door without stopping to figure out where he's going. The pair defeat the Toguro brothers, and rescue Yukina (who Kuwabara has fallen instantly in love with). However, they find out later that the brothers threw the fight, and the group of four that defeated the Saint Beasts, plus a masked fighter later revealed to be Genkai, are coerced into participating in the Dark Tournament.

Making their way through the rounds with plenty of hardship and difficulty to build their character and abilities, they eventually faced off with the Toguro brothers for a second time, Kuwabara failing miserably against the elder Toguro with his regenerative powers... until he shaped his sword into something resembling a giant pingpong paddle... or flyswatter. He flattened the formidable opponent, quite literally. He pretended to be killed during Yuusuke's fight in order to motivate his friend to bring out his full power.

Once they're home, Kuwabara seems to have lost his abilities. However when a new enemy emerges, a former Spirit Detective named Sensui with plans to open up a portal to demon world and release demons to destroy the world and human race, Kuwabara develops a new power entirely. He and his friends are captured and drowning in a water creature that is inescapable as its inside is a separate dimension. In order to save them, and himself, he tries desperately to summon his sword once again. His sword is different, its shape more defined, and it slices through the dimensional barrier. Unfortunately, this ability is exactly what Sensui needed. Kuwabara was kidnapped, and going to be eaten by someone who could absorb powers that way, when the cavalry arrived.

Yuusuke was killed by Sensui, who then fled through the portal and into demon world, pursued by an angry group consisting of Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara. In his rage and grief over his best friend and rival's death, Kuwabara sliced through the barrier, something he'd never have done under normal circumstances, in order to get at Sensui. The three of them took him on together, but they stood no chance... at least not until Yuusuke, somehow revived as a demon (having had a powerful distant demon ancestor), arrived. The fight between Yuusuke and Sensui seemed to be leaning in Sensui's favor, but Yuusuke is never one to be underestimated. For now, Kuwabara will just have to wonder about the fate of his world.
