the canon

Raise your hand if you're never read a Baby-Sitters Club bo- No wait, don't, because then someone's going to say something like "They stopped making them when I was tiny" and I'm going to go cry somewhere. ANYWAY, for those of you who don't know, the Baby-Sitters Club books were a series by Ann M. Martin that followed four five seven plus alternates and Abby girls as they formed a cult club for babysitting mostly in most of the girls' eighth grade year. Pretty straightforward.

Well, mostly. There were well over a hundred books in the series between 1986 and 2000. Over a hundred of those books took place while the older members were in eighth grade. Yeeeeeah.

Look, the canon's kinda cracked when you look back on it as an adult. It was a series marketed towards young girls that just kept selling, so they never aged the girls and it developed Simpsonsish continuity. Which, actually, is something I'm going to be playing with. Stacey's gonna remember taping songs off the radio in 1986 just as well as she'll remember downloading MP3's in 2011 and she will look at you funny if and when you question it. People in the BSC get stranded on desert islands or have drama while snowed in at resorts on class trips or create townwide babysitting events. They all are allowed to go on random trips together. People are allowed to move back and forth and back and forth and back and forth between states all willy nilly within a year's time. Just roll with it.

Oh, and there was also babysitting. Chapters and chapters of babysitting with the girls magically solving problems that adults can't solve. Droid baby time will be special.

about stacey

Stacey McGill is 14 and from New York City, by way of Stoneybrook, CT. Being from NYC (you know, The Big Apple) makes her so sophisticated and mature, and don't you forget it. But seriously, the books treat her being from New York as her being like a really trendy unicorn or something. New Yorkers, feel free to wtf at her as she deserves it. She's an only child and her parents are divorced, with her mom living in Connecticut and her dad (who's engaged to be remarried) lives in New York. Stacey has to shuffle around a lot to keep everyone happy, and she's in Fandom because she couldn't take that and their fighting/using her as a weapon anymore. That said, she's a little spoiled and seems to not really have money issues, and acts as such. She's pretty independent and her own person (for fourteen, anyway), and also fairly self-centered so she acts a lot of the time without thinking/caring about how it might affect someone else. Just ask Claudia, whose guy she stole only to talk about dumping him after graduation. For the most part she's fine to get along with, but she does really, really dumb things sometimes..

I also want to warn that her narrative might get bitchy at times. One of the things with her in the books is that while she'll act perfectly nice to your face, her narrative will point out your shortcomings or flaws or what she doesn't like about you, be it intelligence, looks or style. She even does it with her best friends, though she's never written as a mean girl. THIS IS ALL IC, OOC will not come into this at all, and I'm very sorry in advance.

Also she's kind of a ho. Look back at Stacey in the books and tell me she was never going to be the one most likely to hook up with one of the kids' dads. She had twentysomething crushes/boyfriends/dates in the course of the series, put her in a boarding school situation and oh my god. So yes, she will be flirting with you, boys. She may have crushes on you, whether you're a student, teacher, townie or PW guest. If you're an adult she's honed in on, note that she is fourteen so I am sooooo not letting her get anywhere with it, because I am not skeevy. And if you are uncomfortable with it or don't want to deal with it, just tell me and she'll lose interest. She is really that flighty when it comes to boys, it's totally okay. And if you want your character in a short, like one-month relationship that ends with no drama or the occasional date, Stacey is totally up for it. The skank.

At the point I'm bringing her in, the BSC FINALLY graduated in June, and the club kinda fell apart after that. And thanks to narrative in the last book, Stacey's mostly ditched most of the club members by now. She still talks to Claudia, but they're not as close as they used to be. She also might have a little bit of a fish out of water thing going, because in BSCland everyone defers to the knowledge of thirteen-year-olds and all their ideas are great and everything works out fine in the end. So essentially, she'll be like every other freshman ever.

she has diabetes, you know

She does! I'm sure no one knew that, nope. So yes, Stacey does have diabetes. It's Type I, or brittle diabetes, which means she has to be very careful with her diet, monitor her blood sugar and give herself an insulin injection every day. If she doesn't do this, she can get really sick and end up in the hospital, or worse.

In the books, this gets mentioned ALL THE GOD DAMN TIME. Being diabetic is like her defining characteristic there. At Fandom... it shouldn't be nearly as bad, though you should expect it to show up in narrative A LOT. Like a lot a lot. If it's not at least a little obnoxious, I'll feel OOC. She actually doesn't tell everyone she meets about it, so there's a very good chance that it'll never come up with your character. (Unless of course there's like an assembly or essay contest on Young People With Diseases or something, in which case SAY HELLO TO YOUR NEW POSTER GIRL.) That said, if you want to figure out something's up, there are clues. She eats very healthy, will turn down sweets or junk food, will check if the gum you're offering her is sugarless, won't eat pizza (she can't have the processed cheese) and doesn't drink (alcohol lowers blood sugar). Also she keeps a banana or something in her purse in case her blood sugar gets too low and she can't eat right away. So should you want to find out, feel free to ask her about these omg totally weird eating habits.

If you need to know what she looks like, she's tall and thin (almost too thin, thanks to her diet), with blonde hair and blue eyes. Since the books tried to keep up with styles as they went on, there will be no fluffy permed blonde hair. Unless there's an 80's party. She's a pretty sophisticated!!1 trendy dresser who likes to accessorize, and a lot of the time the outfit is just dumb. There aren't nearly as many outfit descriptions as Claudia, nor are they as fun, but they are there. And yes, I'm using Blake Lively as her PB. Super sophisticated blonde New Yorker who makes out a lot and wears wtfy outfits? Yes please.

Oh, and this is totally Natalie. In case you couldn't figure it out just from the fandom.
