"Smile, Arthur."
Oh, was it that time? Arthur stood at the top of the stairs, sipping some of the champagne he barely remembered getting. "I'm not smiling?" He asked idly, looking over at his wife. "I thought I was."
She smiled, rolling her eyes at him. "You're not. Save that for the toast, you're supposed to look like you have a full glass." And neither one of them would say that they'd been through three glasses already 'wasting time' upstairs. That'd already been agreed upon. "Don't forget the speech."
"I won't." He topped off his glass for appearance's sake and put the bottle to the side, looking down the stairs. "Peter's here?"
Angela nodded. "And if you two could get along for the night, that would exceptional." She smirked, sipping some of her own champagne and ignoring the look that earned her. "Forty one years, Arthur." It hadn't stopped sounding oddly surreal yet, for more reasons than one.
Arthur shrugged, looking down the stairs. "If we make it to fifty, we'll have to do something bigger than this." Something he'd be a lot more interested in than a party full of people being superficially congratulatory. The top reason why he hadn't been all that enthusiastic about the idea of throwing a party in the first place.
"'If' we make it to fifty?" She looked to him, arching an eyebrow. That look that always indicated she was trying to read his mind, when only one of them was really capable of that kind of thing.
Still, if anyone was going to come close with him, it would be her.
"If." He repeated with a slight nod, his gaze never straying from what he could see and hear of the party down below.
"Do you know something I don't, Arthur?"
"Things change, Angela." Arthur shrugged, and topped off her glass, putting the bottle back down. "Life happens." He smiled, and nodded to her. "Shall we?"
She frowned and looked hesitant, then nodded, taking his arm. "Let's go."
He nodded and began to descend down the stairs with her, leaning over and kissing her temple. He leaned down and whispered in her ear as they came into view of the crowd below, and all eyes turned on them. "Smile." He whispered.
And she did.
