Weird dances, weird dreams, weird texture.

I went to a dance competition this weekend. One particular company by the name of Factor E Dance stood out last night; their dances were definitely original. I don't remember them because of stellar technique or weird costumes. I remember them because their choreography, in all five or six dances they presented, were studies in uncontrollable flailing. Hair, arms, legs, hands, each other's arms, legs, heads...no part of the body was exempt from vigorous shaking. The group dances, regardless of the song or subject matter (if there was any present) consisted of seizurely shaking and dragging and touching one's face as if one had forgotten the choreography. This sort of dancing has become popular about thirty-odd years after Pina Bausch started telling her dancers to flail and propel their bodies into walls and other great stuff (only she knows when to turn it on and off, and she's very good at it; I like her work). Now, thanks to So You Think You Can Dance, this sort of dance has gotten exposure in a more tame way (combined with actual technique thankfully), but it was used almost exclusively by Factor E, save one solo that had a couple of arabesques and pirouettes which was actually okay. I hope their teachers are willing to pay for a chiropractor should one of their dancers get whiplash or break a wrist.

I was taking a nap and had one of those waking dreams (during hypnopompia, which is the opposite of hypnogogia -- ). It had music by Arvo Part (Spiegel im Spiegel) and was set at some sort of party? I don't really know what it was. The carpet was red and had a gold baroque-arabesque type pattern on it. The walls were gold. A woman in a red pantsuit did a switch leap in slow motion. People in tuxedos and evening gowns began walking in and diving into large crystal bowls of ice and chilled fruit (like the kind that comes in cans, with lots of pears and pineapples but only two cherries -- only these bowls had lots of cherries) lined up on a long table with a white tablecloth. Some other people were sitting in large wineglasses full of yellow, red, and orange drinks; you could only see their arms and legs. There was a large pile of ice cubes in the middle of the room.

You can probably guess I have no idea what this means.

I ate beef flavored ramen as I wrote this. The shards freeze-dried beef are chewy.

I also saw a car that had run into a deer. There were two layers of deer skin, hair, and blood covering the left headlight.

dance, dreams, ramen
