After going on another computer with language support, copying it down with my horrendous Japanese handwriting, and consulting my father, I have discovered this much:
Dearu is the animate form or something. Aru means "a person is." So "Watashi wa ringo dearu" means "I am an apple." It turns out that "watashi wa ringo desu" means something more along the lines of "I and an apple are."
Almost makes me wish I had Japanese language support on my computer.
P.S. If you want to communicate with me via the telephone, it would be best if you call me. Everyone in my house is up until at least midnight (local time, yo) so you don't have to worry about waking people up. I'm always afraid to call anyone's house before 11 am or after 9 pm.
