On vacation!

I'm in Calgary now. What a long miserable trip that was. My kids hated every minute of the drive. We did it in two days. We drove about 7 hours the first day and stayed overnight in a motel and then went the rest of the way the next day. I think it was about 10 or so hours including all the stops to let the kids get out for a bit to run around. I' ( Read more... )

I asked this in my journal a while back, but I don't think you were on my flist then.

Why do you like cloth diapers? Why don't you like disposables?

This isn't a smart ass question....it's sheer curiosity. None of my RL friends cloth diaper and I'm trying to find out what the appeal is. :)

There are a lot of reasons I like cloth and hate disposables. I orginally switched over to them because my daughter is allergic to the chemicals in disposable diapers. Around the same time I started being more environmentally friendly which is why I like them as well. I also like them 'cause they're so cute and not boring. It's a bonus that I save way more with them especially with both my kids in diapers and on top of that I make most of my own stash so it's very cost effective. I don't like disposables because they are bad for the environment with how long they take to decompose and they have such harsh chemicals in them that are released when they baby pees. And I notice when my friends kid who wears them & pees or poops he smells worse and the diapers themselves just have on odd stink to them after you use cloth and aren't around them. There are lots of arguements for both sides I guess but those are my reasons. I hope that made sense and I didn't babble ( ... )

The reason I ask is I was thinking about maybe trying them....but I'm sooooo not knowledgeable about them, I'd have no idea where to even begin. You really seem to know your stuff since you make your own and all.... Any tips on getting started? How to find a size for my baby? (he's super skinny) How to care for them? Is there a website you could reccomend?

Thanks!!! :)

I'll help you the best I can. I definitely do not know everything. If you want something easy then I suggest AIO's (all-in-ones) or Pockets. AIO's have the soaker sewn in but can take longer to dry because of thickness and pockets have an open pocket in the back where you can stuff as much or as little absorbency as you need. The only thing is you have to pull it out before you wash it which some people don't like. But they dry really fast. They are both waterproof so you don't need anything else with them. Sizes depend upon your child's measurements and/or weight. Different diaper brands go by different stuff. You''ll need a thigh measurement, tummy measurement and rise measurement which is from the top of wear the diaper sits down under the crotch and up the back to where the diaper sits. Hopefully that makes sense. If you want pockets BumGenius are a good one size pocket that a lot of people use. I've never used them personally. There are also flushable liners that you can buy at wal-mart that you can put inside if you want to make ( ... )

Sorry your hand hurts :(

Glad to hear you made it safely though. Don't you just love Zellers? I always hate writing about it on my lj, cause I only have a few friends from Canada lol.

Zellers is great. I wish we still had one in my town. It closed down because they couldn't compete with the Wal-mart. My friend Nai is the manager of the one in the next town over where my dad lives. So if I shop there I get discounts galore. It's nice. lol

Yeah most people have no idea what we're talking about. lol
