Yes..And also, a black history month is a good thing, but there would be Hell to pay if we came up with a white history month. "That's rascist!" wth? dfhbdfbfdbfdrnz It frustrates me, as well...

There really isn't any need for a "white history month" since the majority of what children learn about the history of our nation and the world is centered around the wealthy white males who have inhabited it. Their actions, no matter how greedy or cruel, are hailed as progress (such as the genocide of millions of Native Americans by Europeans upon their "discovery" of the Americas). As anthropologist Eric Wolf put it, "There can be no 'Black history' apart from 'White history,' only a component of a common history suppressed or omitted from conventional studies for economic, political, or ideological reasons."

Sorry to be an asshole but I get really bothered by both the defenses for and attacks upon having a Black History month. Ignore me.

Eh, it's fine. It just annoys me that blacks get all this special treatment because their ancestors were mistreated 100 years ago..They aren't mistreated now (for the most part), so why keep pushing the subject and give them all this special treatment? For years, it was their goal to be equal with whites, but now it almost seems as if they are above whites...

Just because an institution stops (such as slavery) doesn't mean that its effects disappear. Also, keep in mind that this country practiced segregation less than fifty years ago (between one and two generations of people). A person of African descent is very conspicuous in a predominately white country - their skin color is noted by all who meet them, consciously or not. Their ability to gain respect while maintaining an identity that does not simply conform to middle-class white standards is a constant struggle. Most caucasians have the luxury of ignoring race and racism because it has not profoundly affected their lives and the opportunities presented to them. Racism and mistreatment of human beings (Blacks included) is something that is still occurring every day. The tower in which I live has been vandalized about 100 times since I arrived in August with hateful graffiti - "Rape black women," "Kill all n*ggers," and, "Fuck you Jew [written on my door]," just to name a few. A great deal of the educational policies in this country ( ... )

i agree. black people have done amazing things, but so have people of every race. MLK fought for equality of ALL races, not just better treatment of black people.

I completely agree. Way to be, T-man.

Another thought: We're not having Jew History month to apologize for the Holocaust. Although... that would be a hilarious month. We should look in to that. Oh, the comedians.
