From Barbary Coast

I'm mad. MAD with anger and grief.
Last week we were told - by official sources- there was nothing worrying going on in Abruzzo, where increasing seismic phenomena were experienced since December.
The telly showed damaged buildings,  ceiling fragments weighing up to 2-3 pounds fallen inside classrooms  - but everybody knows - they said - that's an ( Read more... )

It's a terrible, terrible tragedy. And yes, I thought "Why not evacuate people for the night, just as a precaution, when there have been small tremors since 3 p.m.?"
I'm really sorry. Your rage is entirely understandable.

If you give a look to local blogs, the small tremors have been there since December, and increasing in force.
Trying to be rational, however, I'm beginning to understand that to evacuate some 80K people every night over a month is an impossible task. As the alert was given 10 days ago, people would probably have gone back home by yesterday night.

As for small graces: L'Aquila is not far from either coast and from Rome. Hotels, the Vatican's receptive network and simple people have offered shelter. The motorway is open and many people will be able to spend the night away from this nightmare.

Thank you for bearing with me *hugs*

Well, that makes things appear in a slightly different light - Austrian news reported that tremors had been starting at 3 p.m. yesterday.
Still, it's horrible, and our news are saying that many people didn't even have tents or food and had to spend the night in a sports stadium, in the rain.

What a tragedy. I am glad to hear that you are ok though, as my first thought on seeing the news was of you and yours.

Thank you for the support (and sorry for the rant...)

I've just got news from a young man, a resident student at L'Aquila University. Yesterday night he decided not to go back to town and the hall of residence because he, like other residents, had already spent several nights outdoors last week. His friends who were inside the building yesterday night however... *sighs*
