Hiya, hope you're enjoying the hols :D

Since I had no access to the Internet on holiday and therefore no pictures for icons I decided to draw on gimp.

In a far corner glinted small objects and coins that Harry guessed Kreacher had saved, magpie-like, from Sirius' purge of the house, and he had also managed to retrieve the silver-framed family ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to barge into an old entry like this, but I just saw your Thestral drawing (which was absolutely positively GORGEOUS) and I noticed you said that for Media Used you put tablet and gimp. I'm starting to draw as well, and I downloaded gimp...except I'm not very good at working it out yet on my own. So my question is, how did you figure out how to use gimp? (and what is tablet...omg I know, dumb question) Is there a manual somewhere that I could follow? I know it's a bit different from photoshop, and there ARE books about GIMP, but if there's another way to figure out the program without spending more money...again, I'm truly sorry to be asking you questions that seem juvenile, but I really need guidance on this :(

Thanks, glad you liked :D
Lol when I first got gimp I was like O_o but I found this (also free yay!) manual helps: http://docs.gimp.org/en/ I know it's huge so just focus on the first few to get the hang of it. Play around and you build up your knowledge as you go, that's what I did anyway.
Then there are some gimp specific communities around livejournal such as gimp_users and I think there are some tutorial links in their memories or userinfo.
I have a tablet similar to this: Wacom Volito 2 yes it's a cheap one because I'm a cheapskate :p
It's about A5 or A6 size but you don't need to fork out loads for A4 or bigger, it works the same
A tablet is where you have a pen to move around on the tablet (board thing) and every move is translated onto the computer screen, i.e. like a mouse, but since you can press hard or soft on the tablet it's like drawing with a pencil
You don't really need a tablet, it's just easier for drawing, especially fiddly things
Hope that helped (and made sense) :D
