I surely can't be the only person to have noticed this:

The problem with metaphor today is that large portions of the population have no idea what you refer to. Example: dj often says he's gonna drop the needle - how many 20 something folk have ever heard a record play and know what that means?

I looked at some of the analysis of the episode, and it appears that this was mostly a call back to Generation 1 MLP Special. I haven't seen many complaints about this episode, but then I don't dig too deep (just passing interest), and I enjoyed the Dragon Ball Z style Energy Battle. (Finally it looked like animators having fun, showing off). Not sure if I like the "Super Sayin" paints on the main 6 though.. I think it was a better capper than a Canterlot wedding, but then I am a violence junkie.

Ah, I thought is was totally a riff on The Last Unicorn. Maybe coincidence? Dunno... that DHX crew is awful clever with the media references. The symbolism is still solid, though.

I couldn't help noticing that, aside from the x4 power-up, Twilight was a more canny fighter than most movie and TV heroes. She made really good use of her teleport and shield spells, she didn't refrain from slamming Tirek when he was down, she went for his friggin' eyes at one point, and she didn't waste time going on with pure violence when it became obvious it wasn't going to work.

And the Rainbow Power designs... oh ghod. Twi's wasn't completely horrible, but the rest were... caustic.

You may not be wrong. The Last Unicorn Movie came out in 1982, and the MLP Special came out in 1984 or 1986, which may be a time that left the first movie fresh in the minds of writers, But judging from the artwork, He was a much less colorful character, mostly brick red and panzer gray, and animated in the usual "designed in the U.S. and contract animated in Japan look of 80's cartoons. Didn't have the cojones to try and watch the ep., but from the still shots... yikes! Heavily influenced by marijuana and Iron Maiden album covers is my guess. Second link is FUBARed, but I did a quick search and found some images. Scorpan has a pretty cool design, actually.
