Author's Notes: (Also for
resound's prompt 'baseball'). The title is pretty much what this whole thing is ^^ Damn, there's a bit of Roxas/Naminé in here, even though I didn't plan for it to be like that... but you know how these are sometimes. They write themselves!
She kind of invades Roxas' world. But only for a little while. Maybe.
Only to play a game, really, at a time when it's the middle of the day and the sun is shining bright.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to this glove," Olette remarks, shaking said glove until it starts to slip right off her hand. It's all brown and leathery and just a little bit too heavy-- but then that's how they usually are, right? She's extensively padded too, all over her chest and knees, and she's wearing a helmet to boot.
Hayner stifles a laugh behind his hand; Pence does too: "and I don't think I'll ever get used to you wearing that. Haha."
"What!?" Olette snaps, giving the boys a hard stare, "this is what a backstop wears, isn't it? And have you held that ball? It's as hard as a rock! It'll be me who gets hit with it if you miss. I don't think that's very fair."
"Okay okay, we're sorry. Gee, we should just be glad you haven't started going on about homework."
Olette raises a finger with her ungloved hand, "and that reminds me! Why haven't we--"
"Guys!" Roxas quickly interrupts, smiling like he really shouldn't. Naminé sighs from behind him, because what they're doing to him is wrong in so many ways; Kairi, who is standing next to her, frowns. Thankfully, she doesn't think to ask. "Can't we just, I don't know, play for once?"
Olette shakes her head. "Tell those two that! Oh boy, am I glad not to be on their team. I feel sorry for you, Kairi."
Kairi laughs like she's been there the whole time. "I'm fine, Olette, really!"
"Yeah, Olette, she's fine," Hayner pipes up, slinging an arm over Kairi's shoulders while Pence stands on her other side.
Naminé hesitates in her own smile, watching as Hayner picks the bat up from the ground while Kairi and Pence move to stand behind the suited-up Olette. There's a hand on her shoulder, giving her a rough squeeze. "Naminé?" Roxas begins, watching her watch the others with a voice of slight concern, "do you want to bowl, or field?"
"Huh?" She breathes.
"Yeah, I know that if you field then there'll be a lot of space to cover, but I think you can handle it."
She stares. "Oh! Um, okay. I'll... field?" She watches as he throws the ball up in the air a few times. "Thank you, Roxas."
He gives her a look. "What for?"
But he doesn't get an answer as Hayner hits the ground with his bat, already impatient with how slow things are moving. "Come'on, guys. Let's get this show on the road!"
"Well, you heard His Majesty." Pence cracks.
Roxas laughs, genuinely.
Naminé just smiles.
The whole set up is that they live in the same house-- her and Kairi, because they're the odd ones out in Twilight Town and they wouldn't fit anywhere else. Same with Roxas, but he already has a place to stay and she doesn't really want to alter that too much. Out the window, they watch the stars from their beds.
"You were kind of quiet today," Kairi says to her, but she's not at all the real thing, "is something wrong?"
Naminé sighs. "Maybe not. Just... this thing with Roxas... I don't think it's right. Not to him. What happens when he wakes up and all of this is gone?"
Their distance isn't too much, and Kairi reaches out to grab onto the other girl's hand.
"You'll be there for him, when the time comes. And then Sora will be too, because that's how it's suppose to be, right? Him and Roxas... You and me."
"I--"
But he's so happy. That's the problem; that's the worst part.
"Would that really be what's best for him anymore? Or..."
Her fingers run circles along Kairi's palms, almost for the warmth, but she knows it's not really there. Hn, maybe she's hurting herself as well.
"...are we in too deep?"
