5_nevers in mind (and since you don't make claims over there, hurrah!). Strong Sora/Kairi and Roxas/Naminé in some. The title is horribly random, I know, but I couldn't really think of anything else :]
When the final light disappears behind the buildings of Traverse Town, Kairi grabs Sora by the sleeve of his shirt and insists they go for a walk.
The keyblade master laughs, saying a quick goodbye to his friends collected in the small house, and they're off. Sora knows better than to wander around second or third district if they want anything less than countless heartless after them. So he tells Kairi what he's thinking, and -after his Oblivion has been exhausted on a total of five enemies- they find themselves behind the Accessory Shop. They hear no whoosh of the wind where they stand, just the pitter-patter of calm feet. People going about their business, as they should.
"What was it like, Kairi?" Sora asks as they walk, slowly settling into a comfortable conversation -like old times, "losing your heart and all." He scuffs his shoe slightly, having kicked an upturned section of brick along the path. "Did you know what was going on around you? ...were you lonely?
She looks at him and thinks. Finally, she shakes her head. "I don't remember much, Sora."
He barely looks discouraged, "you remember something, right, Kairi?"
"Well." She pauses, "there was a girl there... with me, right near the end; she wasn't around for very long, though. I don't think she had a name, either..." The young teen taps her chin, "I'd never seen her before then, but it felt like we had been best friends for a really long time -maybe forever--"
"Kairi. You're crazy," Sora laughs. Kairi huffs, but she knows he's kidding. He's just such a dork like that.
Her choice is to ignore what he says and hold his hand, friendly-like. "I'd like to see her again~"
Her fingers graze against the side of the pencil, colour etching into her skin -- sweet sugar pink.
Naminé sighs. Looking deeply into the eyes of her sketch, big and blue, she rubs at them slightly with the other end of her pencil to dull them down. They look more distant, but the large smile and lively red hair makes it almost impossible to change something into something completely different.
Instead, she prolongs the process. She grabs her blue and she gives the eyes their colour back. Then, she sketches anew; a smooth round face with same-length blonde hair and a shyly innocent expression. Not a replacement, yet. Just an addition. The new picture -person- holds a drawing book protectively, the characteristic she carries whenever the real girl with the pretty purple skirt is too busy with her homework and it's just the three of them -- Naminé, Riku, and Sora. See? Kairi's still there. Because Naminé loves her just as much as the boys do.
And she creates a relationship with the other girl, a memory not carried on to either the replica or the keyblade's chosen one.
While the boys fight, in their little kid t-shirts and shorts with their little toy swords, the two girls laugh and play together in the shade. Kairi helps her create, create dreams of freedom and tasty apple pie-- and the pages fill with colour and hope. Kairi claims her prince, Sora, in one, and suggests Riku of all people knows how to treat her - Naminé - right in another. Just for fun, because it makes her feel better to have someone to talk to when it comes to her work, she doesn't much like the feeling of being alone...
--while she distorts and disfigures the lives of those she wants so desperately to love.
The day before her birthday, Kairi finds herself toppling forward; the world spins; it feels as if something has been torn straight from her heart.
Selphie is instantly at her side, effectively knocking over a chair in her haste. She helps her friend up with a worried smile plastered on her face. "Kairi? Are you okay?"
"My birthday..." Kairi says quietly, staring at the floor. Selphie gives her a look, because when someone falls over for no particular reason at all then the last thing they should be thinking about is tomorrow. After a second, she continues: "Who's coming to my birthday party, Selphie?"
Selphie doesn't miss a beat in answering -although the look in her eyes still reflects concern- "Well there's going to be me, and Tidus, and Wakka..."
The carpet of Selphie's living room is creamy-coloured and soft, especially against her bare toes. She doesn't know why she thinks about it now, only that she continues to stare with unwavering eyes. Hands at her sides, balled into fists, she sighs, "I wish Riku was here, and--" Kairi cuts herself off.
"Sora?" The other girl finishes when the redhead stops, "don't tell me you forgot about him, Kairi!"
"I wouldn't!" Kairi defends quickly, eyes suddenly off the floor and instead focusing on her friend. "I didn't!"
Selphie merely rolls her eyes. And just as unexpectedly as Kairi had been pulled forward, she feels herself being pushed back. Only, Selphie is faster to the punch this time, managing to catch the other girl before she collides with the ground. "Kairi? Kairi! Are you sure you're okay? Do you need to lie down?"
Kairi shakes her head, recalling something important, yet so out of place in her memories: "What about Naminé, Selphie?"
She almost doesn't want to breathe, not when she's so close to telling him the truth, because if she does, he might be gone.
He's not Sora, and she's not Kairi, but they're still connected. It feels lonely without him, on most days. She just wants to watch him; watch him have more than what a nobody is destined for --to be his own person. He has his friends, he has his homework, he has his teenage problems, and -most of all- he's just a normal kid in his own little world.
She doesn't envy him, though. He is oblivious; what he has is a lie.
What she needed to do was tell him, lure him beyond what his carbon-copy friends could see and into the heart of her operations.
Roxas is here now, but she's almost at a loss for what to say. She tries to tell him, though; leans over the edge of the table and spills the thoughts as they come to her, ever so jumbled and ever so confusing. He doesn't want to believe her-- she can see so in his unblinking eyes. But he still sits and listens. And maybe that's all she really wants...
Nothing ever lasts, not even her and him; not when they come in to silence her -to drag her away from Roxas while the poor boy is just as confused as ever.
She almost wants to scream. Roxas! This isn't fair for him! But; instead, she reaches forward, the thought that they won't be lonely again fresh in her mind. She focuses on the most innocent and princess-like of voices, so giddy and empty of hate, for herself-- while she hopes he thinks of bravery past the call of duty.
Finally, she says: "We'll see each other again! You may not know it's me, and I may not know it's you. But we will."
...remember that; that way, maybe there's still hope...
The island wind brushes past her, ever so relaxing; but, she's worried, and she feels alone.
Sure, she has the duck and the dog and the mouse to keep her company -they do their best to cheer her up, they really do- but all she really wants is for her two best friends to come back to her. It's unbearable to wait, there on the beach. She does so with a smile, but she really just wants to cry.
Naminé's in the back of her mind; Roxas will come back... Sora... Riku too.
Kairi nods, "I really did want to see you again. It was sort of my promise to myself. This is the best way, right?"
A smile tinkers on the edge of her thoughts. Of course.
They do, they do come back to her. Her eyes rush to the sky to see them come crashing through the heavens and into the water below. They're home. She rushes out to see them, stopping just at the edge of the water. She looks at Sora, tangled in a mess of tight hugs and drawn-out smiles, and he looks at her.
For a split second, it's not Sora and Kairi, it's Roxas and Naminé.
So this is where it ends. They don't have to be missing something anymore.
