Boy was that a disappointment.

Yes, the visuals were great. Screenplay was decent too. But everything else was "eh".  I know Burton, Depp, and Carter can all do better.

How heavy-handed did the producers get into it I wonder?

I dunno. I thought it was kind of Meh too. I think it might have something to do with Sondheim as a whole. I don't think the lyrics translated well to the screen.

yeah, the singing didn't seem like "singing". It felt forced.

Sometimes, and I don't have a lot of experience with Sondheim, but sometimes, I think he goes so quickly, that it's staccato and not very "sung". In particular I'm thinking of that first song HBC sings about her shitty pies.

Also, I'm going to add that the squickiest part of that film was watching those dead bodies hit the floor in the basement skull first. Something about skull first is...gah.

But Alan Rickman was still teh hawtser. Lecherous bastard, yes, but still with teh velvet vocal cords, at least when he wasn't singing.
