I read _Contact_ back in the late 80s, years and years before the movie. I love the character of Ellie and thought Jodie Foster was perfect for the role (then again, I think Jodie Foster is arguably the best actress of my generation). I also really liked the geeky math stuff in the novel.

I read and enjoyed _The Left Hand of Darkness_ not that long ago. I think you will like it.
