I don't use iJournal any more (I'm using Xjournal) but I know when I have password issues with other applications I find that if I trash the respective applications .plist (found in 'Library'), empty the trash and relaunch the application again (after re-entering the correct password) the application usually works fine again.
The spell check issue I'm not sure about, it could be that it can't find a dictionary to use as a database.
In the Spelling submenu under the Edit menu, make sure "Check spelling while typing" is checked. You can also check spelling from the same menu after you've written your text.

Actually, I think I remember having to do this for iJournal once when I changed my LJ password. It would NOT switch to the new one.
