Ah, that one's a little odd. It was originally "Don't think of an elephant" and I'm pretty sure it came out of some book on politics - weird but there you go. I used a crocodile instead because that's the way I'd always heard it plus crocodiles are way more threatening than elephants. Anyway, the basic thing with "don't think of a _____" is that you can't NOT think of it once it's been mentioned. It's basically impossible not to have the image on the thing in your head. Mmm... the paradox.
