Okay, I'm finally finished reading this book.  The contents of this post were originally intended to be a comment in the old, old thread in the Reading is Sexy community, but it outgrew the character limit.  I also figured that no one is actually checking that thread any longer.  So, here it is.

I'm totally with you on the meta-ending as the best possible ending for just those reasons: there was simply no other believable way for it to end. No real being could have been pulling the strings like that.

I loved Zusak's style and had no problem with it, but I'm a Palahniuk fan.

That's why I'm a little surprised that Zusak told Tseeps that he wishes that he had given more clues pointing towards the meta-ending. It seems like everyone realized that the card-giver had to have some degree of omniscience for the plot to be reasonable. Furthermore, there were hints (particularly in the theater) that the whole group of card conspirators were acting in ways that stretched the laws of nature. It makes perfect sense the the whole thing is being orchestrated by a supreme-being, and the only reason we don't guess that the author is going to insert himself into the story as the card-giver is that it's a crazy idea that never happens.

Yes, I have IM.

Ah, this explains why there was no comment from you when I went back and checked the old old thread last night.
