So I went and visited UTS, the grad school on which I've had my heart set. I had a great time on campus, attended a class, did the whole prospective student thing, etc. At lunch, purely by accident (or serendipity), I ended up sitting next to the head of the department to which I applied. I strongly suggest pulling strings at the department, if you have any. If the department head likes you, get her to call the financial aid office. The buerecrats at FA are not going to do anything for a student, but they will bend over backwards for a professor or administrative official.

Don't be shy about explaining to the department head (or whoever else you know in the department) that the rec thing was not your fault and that this will mean you being unable to attend.

Seconded! If they really want you as a student, they can make the bureaucratic aspects of it happen. My own department did exactly that for me (I applied *months* after the stated deadline) and it ended up being no problem. I don't know how flexible your department is, but it's definitely worth a try!!

That's good advice. I actually already wrote a letter to the department head and haven't heard back from her yet. We'll see.

The said thing is that the woman who wrote me my letter called them up yesterday to explain the situation to them, and they told her that the scholarship committee had already distributed all the funds, so even if they did make an exception in my case, it wouldn't do any good.

I'll keep you updated. Lots of love.
