Nakamaru Yuichi and Tanaka Koki have been friends since childhood. They grew up together being neighbours for 15 years in a place somewhere in Chiba. The relationship they share, although they won’t admit it to themselves, is special. They never failed to be there for each other, and having been friends since toddlers, the bickering is always there. Until, suddenly, Tanaka Koki transferred and settled to a faraway place for college. And the thing that hurt Yuichi the most is that Koki just suddenly disappeared, and did not even told him beforehand.
Koki was calling him twice already, but Yuichi didn’t bother to answer it. He was always like that towards his best friend, and if he doesn’t it answer in the first call, Koki would send him a message. But that time, Yuichi got worried that no message came from the other, and his phone only kept on ringing, so he finally decided to take the third call.
“Answer the damn phone you BITCH!” Koki shouted at him on the other line.
Yuichi got more irritated for being worried over nothing since his friend is still alive and calling him bitch.
“First of all, I’m not a bitch. Second, what the fuck do you want from me?” He shouted at the phone, too.
Koki stayed silent for a bit and suddenly chuckled.
“What’s wrong with you?” Yuichi asked, confused at the sudden change of atmosphere.
“Well... got some news for you.” Koki told him.
“Oh my gosh! You’re married and having a baby already?” Yuichi said in sarcasm. He was still a bit irritated.
“Why are you so gaaaay?” Koki teased.
“Fuck you! What news are you talking about?” Yuichi knew that the conversation wasn’t going anywhere, so he decided to leave the arguments behind and ask what was the purpose of Koki’s urgent call.
It fell silent again, and Yuichi heard a clearing of throat from the other. “I am in Italy already!” He told him in a happy tone.
Yuichi had to think for a bit. “Eh? For what?”
“Duh! For college, of course.”
“Wow! Good for you!” Then he suddenly stopped. “...wait! ALREADY? Why didn’t you even tell me?”
“That’s why I’m telling you now!” Yuichi could totally hear the mocking tone, so he only rolled his eyes.
“You ass! I’m asking you why did you not tell me, before?!” Yuichi didn’t know why he was so mad, he should be happy for his best friend since he knows best how Koki is serious about it.
Koki did not take the anger from the other line seriously, so he just laughed and said that he had to hung up, since he was going to enrol to the University he chose already.
Yuichi has always felt bitter of that time, but they still remained as best friends, and call each other when they have time. Until one time, Koki called again while Yuichi was just in the mood to joke around so he didn’t answer the call immediately. And he suddenly received a text message after the first two calls. Yuichi laughed when he read the message since he totally expected an angry message from his friend. So, he finally decided to call him already.
“I hate you!” Yuichi was what he first heard when the other answered it. “What if something bad actually happened to me? Tsssss... you useless best friend.”
“Yeah, sure, I’m sorry dearest best friend. What’s wrong now?” Yuichi actually felt a bit bad ‘cause who knows what’ll happen. He tried to shake off his thought and listen to what his friend was going to say.
“Due to your delay of answering, I have to go already. I will just send you a message about it. Bye!” And suddenly the call ended.
Yuichi hissed for even bothering to call back when he has just going to be hung up on. And a text message came from the other.
“I will be home tomorrow. Meet me?”
He had to read the message over and over again. It has been three years since Koki left and now he will be back.
“Don’t make me go to the airport and fetch you there.” Was what Yuichi replied, but he can’t deny the fact that he was to happy to hear Koki going back. He didn’t know what to do, and it was his day off from his part-time job that time. There was nothing to keep his thoughts away from the great news. Should he prepare something, probably a surprise party or something? Should he dress up nicely? The other hasn’t seen him for a long time already. He might have look older already. So, he just decided to buy some ingredients to prepare just a simple meal for both of them, and probably new clothes to look good.
Yuichi spent 3 hours in the mall and went home without anything. He just didn’t know what to prepare. He doesn’t know whether Koki has changed his food preferences and he can’t decide what looks good on him.
He can’t just ask Koki about it. No. That would be too gay. So, when he arrived home, he felt his phone vibration and it showed a message from Koki.
“My flight will arrive at 3pm. I’ll go home first and let’s hang out at 4pm. Meet me at the usual park. I miss the restaurants there. Treat me, alright?”
Yuichi rolled his eyes and typed his reply. “Don’t text me like I’m your girlfriend or something. See you!” He hit send and lay himself on the bed. He got tired after shopping of nothing after all.
He woke up and when he looked at his phone to see what time it was, he saw 10am. His eyes grew big, when was the last time he woke up this late despite sleeping early last night. He washed up, and he suddenly remembered about his meet-up with Koki.
“Shoot! I don’t know what to wear, yet.” He cursed himself. He ran to the bathroom, put some random clothes on and decided to go back to the mall for some shopping again. He might find something now. He left his apartment at 1pm since he was really slow at preparing.
He tried, but he just seriously couldn’t think of anything. So, he decided to go on with the outfit he was on, a simple gray shirt with jeans and sneakers. When he looked at the time, it was already 3pm.
“Crap! I have to hurry!” He walked out of the mall and went to the meeting place. He arrived 15 minutes earlier, so he heaved a relieved sigh and sat down on a bench where he usually meets Koki.
On the other hand, Koki was already on his way to his home. He didn’t know that such a long flight would tire him. And he fell asleep and worse with his phone on SILENT.
While Koki was relaxing himself, Yuichi was still patiently waiting. He tried calling the other, but failed miserably. He was so worried that he looked into the net through his phone whether some plane from Italy crashed or was hijacked or something, but nothing. What the hell was Koki doing?
Six hours later, Koki woke up. He was about to sleep again, until he remembered something. He ran as fast as he could, only to see Yuichi shivering.
“Yuichi...” Koki muttered softly. When the called guy noticed the Koki, his face went blank.
Yuichi reached a hand to Koki’s face. The latter thought he was going to be slapped or punched, but the older caressed his face, and Yuichi lets out a smile. “Thank goodness you’re okay.” His tears started welling up, but he wiped them away.
Koki was totally caught by surprise. “Sheesh. Don’t do something that will make me to confess something to you.”
Yuichi looked at him teary-eyed. He didn’t understand what the other was saying, and he was suddenly embraced by Koki. “I’m sorry, Yuichi. I love you.”
Yuichi returned the hug, and he finally felt warm.
“So... why were you so late?” Yuichi asked when he gently pushed Koki away.
Koki started sweating. “Ah... just had to do something.”
“And why did you not inform me?” Yuichi squinted his eyes a bit. He was getting suspicious of what was that something.
Koki laughed awkwardly. “Have I told you that you look nice tonight?” He tried to shift the topic to another.
“What’s nice in a plain shirt and jeans? Come on you freak! Just admit it that you forgot about our meeting!” Yuichi yelled while Koki was already running for his life.
“WAAAA I told you I’m sorry. I just got tired and my nap turned into a heavy sleep. Forgive meeeeeh~!”
