A question for the masses!

Memories.

Those who have left the City and returned, whether you remember being here in the meantime or not, those who have made deals with the deities, even theories. What happens to our memories, in the City and back in our worlds, that some of us remember so easily while others don't remember a thing?

So some people forget it all when they go back home?

So everyone says. I've no personal experience of it yet, mind you.

Okay. um. I think I'd like to keep my memories from here. Both the bad and the good.

And that makes yet another who would. It's curious, no one seems to be in favour of forgetting.

Do you think we could cast something strong enough?

We can only try. It will be the three of us, and he did say he knows someone who can help too.

The three of us can't get out, either. But, I want to try.

They say we don't age... that we're just the same as when we left.

I know, but maybe if we figure this out, it'll help with finding out how to leave.

Do you think we don't? I haven't been paying much attention to that. I suppose we can always check to see if any of us gets any taller. I hardly think we're frozen in time, being in another world shouldn't do that.

After having spent nearly three years here, I think I'd rather keep my memories than not, even if they'd do me little good in my own world.

Good Lord, three years? I think that's the longest I've heard of so far. I can see why you wouldn't want to lose so many memories.

Three years this May, I believe, but I was allowed home for a fortnight two Christmases ago--and I didn't remember the City while I was there, mercifully, but I did remember it when I came back.

A fortnight doesn't seem like much next to all that time. I'd offer my condolences for being trapped here for so long, but you seem to have adapted well?

Would you mind going into more detail about what it was like when you forgot the City? Could you tell there was something you weren't recalling, or did you go about as normal with no idea of what had happened at all?

That's how it happened? No lingering feeling that there was something you'd forgotten, or noticing a blank in your memories?

That does seem to be the most popular answer.

[muttering to himself] Complete removal then, not some kind of block...

Yes, I do understand that. But given the nature of the City I thought maybe some would have reasons not to remember some things.

I have wondered before if it is a price that we pay for our stay, but it seems too inconsistent to be so.

Yes, it would make more sense if it happened in the same way, but it does not seem to at all.

The fact that some remember when they return, and others don't, is all the more curious. I have been here at least twice before this stay, and don't recall it at all.

There doesn't seem to be any sort of pattern to it at all. Perhaps I'm looking at it the wrong way.
