I just came across a package of dried basil with an ingredients list that says: "May contain milk ingredients, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds, wheat, soy and mustard."
Like, really. How can a person with serious allergies really trust the ingredients list if the manufacturers are listing the top seven allergens in order to avoid liability? Is there really a chance that it might be there, or is this paranoia?
Dating back to my own CFIA days, my all-time favourite CYA ingredients story was the labeling on a clear plastic container of yummy office snacks. In big bold print, it said, "Maple Roasted Peanuts". Underneath was the list of ingredients and, as one would expect, "peanuts" headed the list. However, in the fine print (in a teeny-tiny semi-circle around the outer edge of the lid label), it said ... wait for it ... "May contain traces of peanuts"!!! Oh, really??? Ya think???? A good giggle was had over that one. We couldn't decide if it was paranoid CYA overkill or someone suffering serious brainus interruptus! Whatever, it was a real head-shaker for sure!
