Question - Under represented places?
So today's question came out of a conversation regarding accents on TV, especially those spoken by someone who is not from the relevant country/region.
We noted that the Welsh accent (and in fact the Welsh people) were highly under represented in international television and film.
Having spent a good twenty minutes thinking, the only things I could come up with were Notting Hill (and other things with Rhys Ifans in), The Edge of Love (both UK films, but at least large ones with American leads) and Titanic.
Well, Torchwood and Doctor Who, but they definitely fall into the 'Made in Wales' category.
Not counting film and TV made in and for the UK, you rarely hear a Welsh accent, or hear Wales referred to at all. The only instance I could think of where a Welsh accent was used by someone who wasn't Welsh was in Coupling. Given the appearance of Scottish and Irish characters all over the place, I wondered why this might be.
So... Do you know of any place that seems invisible to the casting desk? Or to the script writers, or literary geniuses out there? Any accent that almost never appears outside of that specific area? Any accent that's consistently mis-represented (ie Asian/African/European accents from the wrong part of the relevant continent)?
