Rowing and crew are pretty popular where I live (D.C. area which reminds me, after LJ ate my introductory post I never came back to make a second one) since the Potomac river is almost perfect for it. I'm not personally involved in it but my brother was until a shoulder injury (not from crew, tackle foot ball with the boy scouts. I'm pretty sure his coach was torn between killing my brother and acting like he'd gotten a terminal illness. You get a bad shoulder injury like he did and you're done in crew ( ... )

Is it much of a spectator sport? The big OxBridge rowing comp is a huge event in that area of the UK (especially for the posh folks - it's like Ascot) but it seems like a really strange type of thing to watch.

I don't think I know about a hidden sport passion. As most European countries football is always present in Norway ( ... )

I have a good friend from Norway who brought us back some jellies from one visit and they were shaped like skiing men. I'm seeing the pattern there. XD

Is there one region for skiing that the locals flock to year on year, or is it fairly well dispersed? Is there a specifically tourist-y area of skiing that the locals avoid? (for example, would I choose a different area/region if I was writing a local rather than a tourist?)

Yep, it's like THE national sport. King Olav (he's the predecessor of the current king) did take the tram to go skiing...). There's a statue of him at Oslo's ski stadium - on ski.

For cross country it's more or less just going outside where you live. There are ski runs everywhere. Since it gets dark early in winter the local ski runs are equipped with lights and the local ski clubs tend to prepare them, laying the tracks.

The most tourist-y areas are probably around the larger places where the slopes for downhill skiing are - Trysil, Hemsedal, Geilo, maybe Lillehammer (where the Olympics where in 1994). They of course also have runs for cross country.
