[Background] For as long as he can remember, Sawada Tsunayoshi has always been "Dame-Tsuna": a no-good, pathetic loser who fails at school, sports, and pretty much everything he does. That is, until a baby named Reborn who calls himself a hitman shows up and tells Tsuna that he's going to be the 10th boss of the Vongola family-- as in, one of the most powerful mafia families in all of Italy. Tsuna objects constantly to this, naturally-- he's just a loser, he doesn't want to be part of the mafia, etc. etc. Reborn never listens, of course, and manages to get Tsuna into all sorts of trouble as they go about building his mafia family. Through Reborn's sadistic training and a special bullet that sends him into a "dying will," allowing him to do amazing things, Tsuna starts to become a bit less loser-ish than before. He gains real friends [scary but loyal Gokudera, friendly Yamamoto, extremely crazy Ryohei, etc.], dangerous enemies, and a range of everything in between-- and also manages to get the attention of the girl he likes, Kyoko. Each and every last one of the people involved with the Vongola family is insane, and at times Tsuna plays a sort of straight man to everyone else's collective insanity. Ultimately, though, he accepts them through all their crazy faults, although they may give him a headache most of the time.

Cue the arrival of a real, dangerous villain in the form of one Rokudo Mukuro. Mukuro and his lackeys appear on the scene and start attacking innocent students at Namimori, sending the school and the town into a frenzy. Reborn quickly deduces that the culprit of these attacks is involved with the mafia and therefore targeting Tsuna; thus, Tsuna is the one who has to do something about it. Tsuna, naturally, wants no part of it, but soon his friends are involved. Gokudera is targeted for attack, and Tsuna rushes to the scene even knowing that there's little he can do to help. Soon after, a bunch of them go to Mukuro's "headquarters" of sorts to take him down, on orders by the Ninth boss. They fight many others in the process of getting to Mukuro-- including one sent to pretend to be a fake Mukuro himself-- and many of them nearly die in the process. After hearing the fake Mukuro's story of how the real Mukuro manipulated him and forced him to kill his own family, Tsuna won't stand for it and decides to defeat Mukuro. The group gets split up, once again being attacked by Mukuro's various lackeys, and in the end Tsuna is the one who has to face off against Mukuro alone, with Reborn off to the side observing. After a long, bloody battle against Mukuro, Tsuna manages to emerge victorious, just barely, with the help of a ~new item~ in the form of gloves that can help him use the flame of the Dying Will as a weapon, as well as another one of Reborn's special bullets. Mukuro is then sent off to a special prison, where he will be punished harshly-- Tsuna seems to have second thoughts once he learns this. But in the end, all is well, and the world is right again for a little while.

Until the Varia show up in town, that is. The Varia are the Vongola's elite assassination squad-- and they want their leader, Xanxus, the Ninth's son, to become the Vongola Tenth. This is when the Vongola Rings come into play-- the boss gets the Sky ring, and then each of his six guardians gets a corresponding ring. The Ninth [a fake, in reality] declares that because he and his advisor [Sawada Iemitsu, Tsuna's father] disagree on the choice of boss and guardians, there must be one-on-one battles held for the rings between each of the two holders. Tsuna will be facing off against Xanxus, an incredibly powerful and dangerous man; in order to prepare, Tsuna undergoes extensive training with Reborn and his father's apprentice Basil while they're not fighting, and eventually manages to come up with some powerful techniques [see below]. In the meantime, all the battles for the rings are going on at night-- insert long and tedious description of battles here. They all have their individual battles, that's that, the only really relevant one here is Hibari's. Hibari faces off against Gola Mosca, which is actually a vaguely man-shaped weapon bought on the black market by the Vongola. Hibari, being Hibari, takes it out in one hit-- but after that Gola Mosca goes berserk, forcing Tsuna to intervene and destroy it for good before it destroys everything else. What Tsuna doesn't know, however, is that Gola Mosca relies on a human with a strong Dying Will flame as its power source. Inside the machine is the real Ninth boss, almost dead because of the battle. The Ninth assures Tsuna that his state isn't Tsuna's fault; Xanxus, however, having set the situation up, takes the opportunity to label Tsuna as the bad guy and usurp the position of Tenth boss. This is the last straw for Tsuna: he declares that he will not let Xanxus become the Tenth boss. Cue the final battle the next night-- another long, bloody battle in which Tsuna [and in fact, all of his other guardians] nearly dies. Xanxus actually gains the ring at the very end, in a sick twist of fate, but his blood is rejected-- it turns out that he's not actually the Ninth's blood son, and so he cannot be the Tenth. Thus, the battle is won, Tsuna once again gains his title of Tenth boss, and all is right with the world, again, for a short time.

That is, until soon after, when Reborn is hit with the Ten-Year Bazooka-- a device that replaces you with your ten-years-later self for five minutes-- and disappears. And doesn't return after five minutes. In trying to investigate, Tsuna is sent to the future as well, where he finds himself in a coffin: dead ten years in the future. Many of the others follow soon after: Gokudera, Yamamoto, Haru, Lambo, I-Pin, and Kyoko are all sent to the future as well. It is explained to them that the situation in the future is bleak: another family, the Millefiore, is on a mission to completely wipe out the Vongola. To make a long story very, very short: through a lot of fear, fighting, and puzzling out clues, it is determined that they need to kill Irie Shouichi, one of the Millefiore higher-ups with a grudge against the Vongola that ten-years-later-Gokudera specifically pointed out. To do this, they need to raid the Millefiore base-- a highly dangerous task in and of itself. Because of this, Tsuna and the others spend an extensive amount of time training and coming up with new badass stuff to help fight against their enemies [see below]. Cue the night of the raid-- the Millefiore have discovered the location of their secret base and infiltrate them; it's a tense situation, but ten-years-later-Hibari stays behind to take care of the intruders while Tsuna and the others sneak out to go through with the raid on the Millefiore base. When they get there, they run into stupidly powerful people right off the bat-- insert long and tedious description of those battles here. Eventually they are discovered to be within the base, and are running out of time. Lal Mirch, another ally in the future, was supposed to go and act as a decoy fighting against the Millefiore's Moscas, but since she has been injured, she can't; Tsuna then volunteers to go in her place. Cue fight against about four Moscas, even more powerful than the one in the present. After a long battle, Tsuna eventually wins, but is knocked out when the force of the blast from his unperfected technique propels him backwards into the wall. This is when Spanner, resident mad mechanic in charge of the Moscas, finds him and takes him back to his workshop-- and also when he's due to enter Somarium.

[Personality] At the beginning, Tsuna appears to be nothing more than a loser. He doesn't have the will to try hard, and since he's bad at everything he has no confidence at all. Then Reborn shows up, and the rest of his Family shows up, and he slowly starts to change, and some of his personality traits become more apparent.

Tsuna, overall, means well. He'll try to do or say something to help a friend whenever he can, even if he can't do much. He fights because he needs to, but he doesn't like to-- he fights to protect those he loves, and because he genuinely cares about the people around him. Tsuna most of the time prefers to be much more relaxed-- once he gains friends, he likes it. He likes hanging out and playing around and having happy times. That's what he's fighting for, really, and he's willing to put his life on the line for his friends and those happy times. Tsuna is also decidedly humble, and generally holds others in a higher regard than himself-- he really does think of himself as a loser, or at the most, just an ordinary person. He has almost no confidence in himself, and generally gives up before starting-- although later in the series this begins to change a little bit, when he starts gaining self-confidence.

What Tsuna does not realize himself is that he has a sort of "so ordinary he's extraordinary" quality about him. He's genuinely kind and caring about those around him, and is able to see situations differently than most others would. He's incredibly selfless-- for example, feeling sorry for Mukuro when he learns of his situation in prison, even after everything Mukuro did to him. And he's willing to stand up for his opinion on these matters even if he's widely disagreed with. Tsuna also has a definite sense of justice-- if someone is doing something horribly wrong [see: Mukuro, Xanxus], and he is in a position to do something, he will not let them get away with it. At all.

Overall, Tsuna thinks he's an ordinary loser, but more than that, he's a caring, selfless, righteous individual who most of all wants people to be happy.

[Specialties/Abilities] For someone who's supposed to be a loser, Tsuna gains a lot of badass fighting techniques over the course of the series. First off, Tsuna's major ability that can really be considered "his" is the Hyper Dying Will mode [as opposed to the regular Dying Will, which is a bullet that can affect anybody]. This state, as opposed to the frenzied frantic-ness of the regular Dying Will, allows Tsuna to attack in a calm, rational manner. In addition, the special gloves that Reborn's chameleon Leon made for Tsuna-- "X-gloves"-- allow Tsuna to use the fire of the Dying Will Flame to attack and even fly around.
Through extensive training, he has been able to learn and develop techniques that allow him to use the Dying Will and its flame to the best of his ability. There are several versions of the Dying Will Zero Point Breakthrough that he uses for both attack and counterattack. One, of his own invention, allows him to go into a sort of "minus" state [passing the "zero point," hence the name] and absorb any flames directed at him, and, if he wishes, use them to gain more energy for himself. It's like catching your opponent's ammunition and shooting it back at them. The other attack, the same one used by the Vongola First, produces ice, allowing Tsuna to freeze anyone and anything. It's like a reversal of the Dying Will Flame-- an ice that cannot be broken and can only be unfrozen by said Dying Will Flames.
His other attack, only developed more recently, is known as the "X-burner"-- a powerful attack that allows Tsuna to actually shoot out a wave of flame, basically destroying anything in its path. At this point in the series, the technique is not perfected yet-- it's not up to its full potential, and he still can't pull it off without injuring himself in the process-- but the move has the potential to be incredibly powerful.

[Affection] Um. Tsuna's generally a pretty friendly guy, so go ahead and be friends. When it comes to romance, he already has a crush, so good luck there-- he'll probably dissuade you, but he won't hate you or anything if you try if he even notices you like him like that-- he can be a little dense.

[Fighting] Oh, do feel free to try~ He won't fight you unless he has to, though. Or if you piss him off.

[Other Facts] Two words: Millefiore arc. All the other KHR boys are from after Varia. Oh my poor, poor Tsuna.
